Sarah Shantz-Smiley
Sarah Shantz-Smiley (born 24 August 1982) is a Canadian-born Icelandic ice hockey player and coach. She has been a member of the Iceland women's national team since 2011, the same year she was named the Icelandic Women's Ice Hockey Player of the Year. Playing career Having played for the University of Windsor in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (now U Sports), Shantz-Smiley graduated in 2005. Following university, she competed with the now-defunct Montreal Axion in the original National Women's Hockey League. During the 2005–06 NWHL season, Smiley appeared in 35 games, logging 4 goals (of which three were game-winning goals) and 4 assists for 8 points. In 2006, she signed on to play in the Icelandic Women's Hockey League. In 2008, Shantz-Smiley would play for a club team in Australia. National Women's Hockey League (1999–2007)
The National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) was a women's ice hockey league established in Canada in service from 1999 to 2007. In its final season the league was run by the Ontario Women's Hockey Association. History The NWHL superseded the old Central Ontario Women's Hockey League in 1998–99. After the old COWHL dropped down to three teams in 1997–98, the new league expanded to Brampton, Ottawa and the Montreal area (Montreal, Bonaventure and Laval) in 1998–99. The league was officially renamed the National Women's Hockey League on Feb. 16, 1999 with Susan Fennell as the league's first president/Commissioner. 2011 Women's World Ice Hockey Championships – Division IV
The following teams took part in the Division IV tournament which was held in Reykjavík, Iceland, from March 29 to April 4. The winner of the group, New Zealand, was promoted to Division III for the 2012 championships (renamed Division IIA). Initially the tournament was to include Estonia, however the IIHF provide no reason for their absence and did not replace them. Despite having only five teams the last-placed team in the group, South Africa was temporarily relegated to Division V (renamed Division IIB Qualification). International Ice Hockey Federation
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF; french: Fédération internationale de hockey sur glace; german: Internationale Eishockey-Föderation) is a worldwide governing body for ice hockey. It is based in Zurich, Switzerland, and has 83 member countries. The IIHF maintains the IIHF World Ranking based on international ice hockey tournaments. Rules of play for IIHF events differ from hockey in North America and the rules of the National Hockey League (NHL).
