Sara Pinto Coelho
Sara Pinto Coelho (1913 in Portuguese São Tomé and Príncipe – 1990 in Portugal) was a writer of fiction, plays and children's literature in the Portuguese language. She was born in Roça Esperança, a hamlet in the island of Príncipe and was daughter of Manuel dos Santos e Abreu Jr. and Maria Sarah de Lima. She lived the majority of her adulthood in Mozambique where she was a primary school teacher. She wrote theatrical plays for the radio, novels, short stories and children's books. She was director of a theatrical program on Rádio Clube de Moçambique from 1967 to 1972. She later married Judge José Augusto de Vasconcelos Pinto Coelho, native of Mondim de Basto, Casa do Balcão and was mother of the journalist Carlos Pinto Coelho. She died in Praia de Miramar in 1990. Portuguese São Tomé And Príncipe
São Tomé and Príncipe islands were a colony of the Portuguese Empire from its discovery in 1470 until 1975, when independence was granted by Portugal. History The Portuguese explorers João de Santarém and Pêro Escobar discovered the islands around 1470,Francisco, Agostinho, p.24 which they found uninhabited.Grivetti, Shapiro, p. 1849 The São Tomé island was named by the Portuguese in honor of Saint Thomas, as they discovered the island on his feast day, while the Príncipe island (Prince's island) was named in honor of Afonso, Prince of Portugal, his father's favorite. The first attempt of settlement in the islands began in 1485, when the Portuguese Crown granted to João de Paiva the São Tomé island. However, this attempt was not successful, because the settlers were unable to produce food in the specific conditions and climate that the islands offered, and because of the tropical diseases that affected the settlers.
