Sara Bendahan
Sara Rosa M. Bendahan (1906–1946) was a physician and the first Venezuelan woman to complete her medical degree in that country. She was born in Guatire in February 1906, and her parents were Moroccan Jewish immigrants. Biography In September 1924 she began studying at the Central University of Venezuela. In her third year of studying medicine she suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis and went to Los Teques to recover, but did not stop studying and passed her third year (of six) exams. However, due to the deaths of family and friends she initially left medical school without graduating, needing only to complete her thesis and examination. She did this and graduated as a doctor on July 31, 1939, from Central University of Venezuela. She was appointed by her graduating classmates to give the speech at the ceremony where she was awarded the title, Doctor of Medical Sciences, becoming the first Venezuelan woman to earn that degree in her country. The Central University of Venezuela (Spanish: ''Universidad Central de Venezuela''; UCV) is a public university of Venezuela located in Caracas. It is widely held to be the highest ranking institution in the country, and it also ranks 18th in Latin America. Founded in 1721, it is the oldest university in Venezuela and one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Guatire
Guatire is a city in Miranda, Venezuela. In 2006, its population has been estimated at 200,417. Today, Guatire has virtually merged with its neighbour, Guarenas forming the Guarenas-Guatire conurbation. Pulmonary Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease usually caused by ''Mycobacterium tuberculosis'' (MTB) bacteria. Tuberculosis generally affects the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of the body. Most infections show no symptoms, in which case it is known as latent tuberculosis. Around 10% of latent infections progress to active disease which, if left untreated, kill about half of those affected. Typical symptoms of active TB are chronic cough with blood-containing mucus, fever, night sweats, and weight loss. It was historically referred to as consumption due to the weight loss associated with the disease. Infection of other organs can cause a wide range of symptoms. Virginia Pereira Álvarez
Virginia Pereira Álvarez (1888-12 April 1947) was the first Venezuelan woman to enroll in the medicine course in Venezuela. Career Pereira Álvarez was born in Ciudad Bolívar, Bolívar state, on 1888, and was a normalist teacher that graduated in 1903. She started her medicine studies in the Central University of Venezuela in 1911, emigrating to the United States in 1912. Lya Imber
Lya Imber (1914–1981) was a pediatriacian. Biography Imber was born in Odessa, Ukraine on 17 March 1914 and died from cancer in Caracas, Venezuela on 23 September 1981. She was a prominent pediatrician vice president of UNICEF, and the first woman in Venezuela to earn the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences, as well as the first female member of the board of the Medical School of the Federal District. Her parents, Naúm Imber and Ana Barú, left Soroca (Moldova) together with Lya, who was 16 years old at the time, and her sister, Sofía, to emigrate to Venezuela. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (9 June 1836 – 17 December 1917) was an English physician and suffragist. She was the first woman to qualify in Britain as a physician and surgeon. The history of the Jews in Venezuela dates to the middle of the 17th century, when records suggest that groups of ''marranos'' (Spanish and Portuguese descendants of baptized Jews suspected of secret adherence to Judaism) lived in Tucacas, Caracas and Maracaibo.
