Sara Airport
Sara Airport is an airport on northern Pentecost Island, Vanuatu. Overview Sara is a short grass airstrip built across a hilltop, next to the village of Arongbwaratu. Sara does not suffer from the problems of waterlogging that formerly afflicted Lonorore, Pentecost's other airport, although the airport's high location makes it vulnerable to disruption in windy weather. Following the 2008-2009 upgrading of Lonorore, and improvements in the reliability and frequency of shipping to Pentecost, Sara Airport has declined slightly in importance, although it remains a valuable transport link for the communities of northern Pentecost. Pentecost Island
Pentecost Island is one of the 83 islands that make up the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu. It lies due north of capital Port Vila. Pentecost Island is known as in French and in Bislama. The island was known in its native languages by names such as ''Vanu Aroaroa'', although these names are not in common use today. Pentecost has also been referred to as ''Raga'' or ''Araga'', a tribal name that originated in the north but is now widely applied to the whole island. Lonorore Airport
Lonorore Airport or Lonoror (possibly from Ske ''lon or or'' "in the fences") is an airport on south-western Pentecost Island, Vanuatu, 3 km south of Baravet village. Overview Lonorore began as a grass airstrip, capable of accommodating 20-seater Twin Otter aircraft in good conditions, although it was frequently unusable due to waterlogging in wet weather. The airport is in the middle of an old coconut plantation, and was first built as a private airstrip in colonial times by the plantation owner. The airport was upgraded in 2008–2009 with a longer, tarmacked runway capable of operating in most weather conditions and being used by larger ATR aircraft, though in practice the airport is still serviced only by Twin Otters, together with Islanders and small charter planes. Raga Language
Raga (also known as Hano) is the language of northern Pentecost Island in Vanuatu. Like all Vanuatu languages, Raga belongs to the Oceanic subgroup of the Austronesian languages family. In old sources the language is sometimes referred to by the names of villages in which it is spoken, such as Bwatvenua (Qatvenua), Lamalanga, Vunmarama and Loltong. It is the most conservative language of Pentecost Island, having preserved final vowels while also retaining the five-vowel system inherited from Proto-Oceanic, compared to other languages spoken on the island, which have all developed additional vowels in addition to pervasive vowel deletion. With an estimated 6,500 native speakers (in the year 2000), Raga is the second most widely spoken of Pentecost's five native languages (after Apma), and the seventh largest vernacular in Vanuatu as a whole.
