Sapperton, Gloucestershire
Sapperton is a village and civil parish in the Cotswold District of Gloucestershire in England, about west of Cirencester. It is most famous for Sapperton canal tunnel The Sapperton Canal Tunnel is a tunnel on the Thames and Severn Canal near Cirencester in Gloucestershire, England. Sapperton Railway Tunnel
The Sapperton Railway Tunnel is a railway tunnel near Sapperton, Gloucestershire in the United Kingdom. It carries the Golden Valley Line from Stroud to Swindon through the Cotswold escarpment. It was begun by the Cheltenham and Great Western Union railway in 1839 and taken over by the Great Western Railway in 1843, being completed in 1845. There are actually two tunnels, the main one at in length, and separated by a short gap, a second at . Construction, engineering, and maintenance difficulties The initial plans for the tunnel, dating from 1835, were unusual in that it was proposed to construct the tunnel on a curve, but this seems to have been abandoned before any construction was done; some works remain which are thought to relate to the approach route for the original line, but no excavations were made on that line for the tunnel itself. Sapperton Canal Tunnel
The Sapperton Canal Tunnel is a tunnel on the Thames and Severn Canal near Cirencester in Gloucestershire, England. With a length of , it was the longest tunnel of any kind in England from 1789 to 1811. Construction, following an Act of Parliament, began in 1784. Twenty-six shafts were dug along the line of the tunnel and workfaces dug in each direction eventually joining up before the diameter of the tunnel was expanded. Difficulties were encountered related to strata of Great Oolite (solid limestone) and Fuller's Earth clay. These caused roof falls and narrowing of the channel which continued after the tunnel opened in 1789 and required frequent maintenance. The stone portals at either end are listed buildings. Boats passed through by legging until 1911. The canal was abandoned by 1933 and subsequent roof falls mean that it is no longer navigable. Cotswold Canals Trust have proposed restoration. Sapperton, Lincolnshire
Sapperton is a village in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. The nearest town is Grantham, to the west. Adjacent villages include Braceby, Pickworth and Ropsley. Sapperton was a civil parish until 1931 when it was abolished to form Braceby and Sapperton. "Causennis" is a Roman settlement site less than to the south of Sapperton on the East Glenn River, near its source. It was excavated between 1973 and 1981, and again 1984 to 1988, revealing stone buildings, iron-smelting furnaces and various artifacts. The Hall is a Grade II listed building and dates possibly from the 16th century, with 17th- and 18th-century alterations, and very minor 19th- and 20th-century alterations. St Nicholas parish church is Grade II listed and dedicated to Saint Nicholas. It dates from the 12th to the 15th century, with 19th-century alterations. Sapperton is a neighbourhood of the City of New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, located in the northeastern end of that city and up to its boundaries with the Coquitlam and Burnaby. Located on the slope above the Fraser River and focused on Brunette Avenue and Columbia Street, and northeast of the former British Columbia Penitentiary, the neighbourhood was the location of the barracks and other housing for the Royal Engineers, Columbia Detachment, who were known as "sappers", hence the name.
