Sapho (1913 Film)
''Sapho'' is a lost 1913 silent film feature drama directed by Lucius Henderson and is based on the novel by Alphonse Daudet and Adolphe Belot. It stars stage actress Florence Roberts and Shelley Hull. It was produced by the Majestic Motion Picture Company and released by World's Special Films. As with '' Queen Elizabeth(1912)'' and ''Resurrection(1912)'', the film was one of the first features to star a major actress known by name. It competed with a four-reel French film that same year, 1913. ''Sapho'' as a play, written by Clyde Fitch, was produced by Olga Nethersole on Broadway in 1900 to acclaim but also tinged with scandal as the play ran afoul of the New York Police Department, who shut it down for a time and arrested its stars Olga Nethersole and Hamilton Revelle. Lucius Henderson
Lucius Junius Henderson (June 8, 1861 – February 18, 1947) was an American silent film Film director, director and actor of the early silent period involved in more than 70 film productions. Biography Born in Aledo, Illinois, Henderson was a classically trained musician who later attended Harvard College. He began stage-acting in the early-1880s and later supported both Mesdames Modjeska and Janauschek in repertory. He entered film with the Thanhouser Company in late 1910 in film, 1910, functioning as chiefly a director. In the autumn of 1913, Henderson led the Thanhouser company of players to Los Angeles. But while the unit quickly returned to New Rochelle, New York, Henderson remained behind to direct for Majestic (video game), Majestic and the Long Beach-located California Motion Picture Company. Pauline Frederick
Pauline Frederick (born Pauline Beatrice Libbey, August 12, 1883 – September 19, 1938) was an American stage and film actress. Early life Frederick was born Pauline Beatrice Libbey (later changed to Libby) in Boston in 1883 (some sources state 1884 or 1885), the only child of Richard O. and Loretta C. Libbey. Her father worked as a yardmaster for the Old Colony Railroad before becoming a salesman. Her parents separated when she was a toddler and Frederick was raised primarily by her mother to whom she remained close for the remainder of her life (her parents divorced around 1897). As a girl, she was fascinated with show business, and determined early to place her goals in the direction of the theater. Edward Lamar Johnstone (March 15, 1884 – May 21, 1919) was an American silent film actor and director. Biography Born in Fairfax, Virginia, Johnstone starred in 82 films as an actor between 1911 and his death in 1919. He often starred alongside Dorothy Gibson, an actress who survived the sinking of the ''Titanic''. Johnstone directed three films; one in 1913 called ''Truth in the Wilderness'', starring Charlotte Burton, ''The Turning Point'' (1914), and ''The Unforgiven'' (1915).
