The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Consolazione ( it, Santuario di Santa Maria della Consolazione) is a Roman Catholic Marian Sanctuary church located at the end of via Provvidenza Virgillito Providenza, on a hill-top South-West of Paternò in Sicily. It is also known as the ''Santuario della Madonna Santissima della Consolazione''. History A smaller church had been built at this site to honor a putative apparition in 1580 of the Virgin Mary to a young woman tending her goats in the field. Called the chapel of ''Santa Maria del Pietoso''; in 1616, the named was changed to ''Maria SS. della Consolazione''. In 1935, the church was made into a sanctuary by the archbishop of Catania. During World War II, the former church was nearly razed by bombardments. The present church, in a neo-Romanesque style, was not completed until 1954 under the patronage of Michelangelo Virgillito. El Santuario was founded on 11 March 1765 by Captain Antonio Gómez de Castro. Its elevation is 2.150 masl with an average temperature of 17 °C. Paternò
Paternò ( scn, Patennò) is a southern Italian town and ''comune'' of the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily. With a population (2016) of 48,009, it is the third municipality of the province after Catania and Acireale. Geography Paternò borders with the municipalities of Belpasso, Biancavilla, Catenanuova ( EN), Centuripe (EN), Ragalna, Ramacca and Santa Maria di Licodia. Its only hamlet (''frazione'') is the village of Sferro. Within Paterno there is a geologic feature named 'Salinelle', a place where small mud volcanoes emerge from cracks in the ground. This area in which the Salinelle surfaces includes an archeological site currently uncovering evidence of Roman baths previously built on and thought to have used the Salinelle mud. History The site of Paterno was settled before 3500 BC. Its inhabitants were probably the Sicani, although it was located in mainly Sicel territory.
