Santissima Annunziata, Pistoia
The church and convent of the Santissima Annunziata (Most Holy Virgin of the Annunciation) is a Baroque-style, Roman Catholic church located on Piazza de Servi #4, Pistoia, region of Tuscany, Italy. The convent presently functions as a warehouse. The church is down via Laudesi from the San Desiderio, and via Piazza de Servi, From San Giovanni Decollato. History Priests of the Servite order arrived to Pistoia by 1241, and moved here to a house with a small oratory titled ''Santa Maria Novelleta'' and located just outside the gates of the Porta San Piero. By 1270-1271 construction of a convent and church had begun. Initially, the Servites were affiliated with San Pietro Maggiore in town, but by 1296, a new larger church at the site was underway, not completed until 1393. The original consecration to ''Santa Maria de’ Servi'' was altered in 1537 to the'' Santissima Annunziata''. Leonardo Malatesta
Leonardo da Pistoia, also known as Leonardo Grazia, (1502 – ca. 1548) was an Italian painter of the Mannerism school. Biography Da Pistoia was born in the city of Pistoia, Tuscany, and died in Naples. According to Benezit, he is often confused with Leonardo di Francesco di Lazzaro Malatesta (ca. 1483 – after 1518). Both men were known as "Leonardo da Pistoia" or as "Malatesta." In Naples, da Pistoia was also known as "Guido da Napoli" or as "Guelfo dal Celano." Early in his career, da Pistoia worked in Rome under Gianfrancesco Penni (also known as "il Fattore"). He was a copyist of Raphael's paintings. He and Penni later relocated to Naples. While there, da Pistoia painted for the churches of Santa Maria del Parto a Mergellina, San Domenico Maggiore, and Monte Oliveto. Giovanni Martinelli
Giovanni Martinelli (22 October 1885 – 2 February 1969) was an Italian operatic tenor. He was associated with the Italian lyric-dramatic repertory, although he performed French operatic roles to great acclaim as well. Martinelli was one of the most famous tenors of the 20th century, enjoying a long career at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and appearing at other major international theatres. Francesco Montelatici
Cecco Bravo (15 November 1601 – 1661) was an Italian painter of the Florentine Baroque school. His true name is Francesco Montelatici. Biography He trained with Giovanni Biliverti and was also close to Sigismondo Coccapani. In the early 1620s he worked in the studio of Matteo Rosselli. By 1629, he had his own independent studio. His first recorded work is a fresco of the ''Virgin, St John & Angels'' (c. 1628/9; San Marco, Florence) and a painting of ''Charity'' ( Annunziata of Florence). In 1633, he painted six lunettes with scenes from the ''Life of the Blessed Bonaventura Bonaccorsi'' for the church of Santissima Annunziata in Pistoia, continuing a series begun in 1601 by Bernardino Poccetti. Bernardino Poccetti (26 August 1548 – 10 October 1612), also known as Barbatelli, was an Italian Mannerist painter and printmaker of etchings. Biography Born in Florence, he was initially trained as a decorator of facades and ceilings, enrolling in 1570 in the Florentine painters guild for such work, the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, (''Academy of the Arts of Drawing''). Tommaso Redi
Tommaso Redi (22 December 1665 – 10 October 1726) was an Italian painter, active during the late- Baroque in his native Florence. He initially apprenticed with the Florentine painter Anton Domenico Gabbiani (1652–1726), and then moved to Rome to work in the Medici Academy in that city, which employed Carlo Maratti and Ciro Ferri as teachers. He returned to Florence to paint in the Palazzo Pitti and also was a respected portrait painter. When the Czar Peter visited Florence, he was particularly struck with the works of Redi, and being desirous of establishing an academy for the promotion of the fine arts at Moscow, attempted to have Redi run the academy, but the latter did not accept the offer.
