Santiago Almeida
Santiago Almeida (July 25, 1911 – July 8, 1999) was a Texas musician influential in the development of the musical genres of '' tejano'' and ''conjunto''. Biography Almeida was born in Skidmore, Texas and grew up on a farm. In his teens played the ''bajo sexto'' in his family's ensemble, ''La Orquestra Almeida''. In the mid-1930s, Almeida began playing with accordionist Narciso Martínez at local dances and festivals around Brownsville, Texas and Raymondville, Texas. Local merchant and furniture store owner Enrique Valentin heard them and persuaded recording director Eli Oberstein to record them for the Bluebird label. In 1935, Almeida and Martinez recorded a single for Bluebird Records, "La Chicharronera" b/w "El Troconal" (the former a polka and the latter a schottische). Skidmore is a census-designated place (CDP) in Bee County, Texas, United States. The population was 925 at the 2010 census. Geography Skidmore is located in southern Bee County at (28.255244, -97.681956). U.S. Route 181 passes through the community, leading north to Beeville, the county seat, and southeast to Sinton. Texas State Highway 359 leads southwest from Skidmore to Interstate 37 on the outskirts of Mathis. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Skidmore CDP has a total area of , all of it land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 1,013 people, 348 households, and 258 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 96.4 people per square mile (37.2/km2). There were 427 housing units at an average density of 40.6/sq mi (15.7/km2). Ideal Records
Ideal Records was a record label from Texas specializing in Tejano music. It became the most important record label of the genre in the 1940s and 1950s, recording tejano's most prominent artists. It declined in the early 1960s, but not before leaving an indelible mark on Tex-Mex culture. History Ideal was founded by Paco Betancourt and Armando Marroquín in 1946, making it the first of southern Texas record labels owned by Mexican-Americans. Following the Second World War the major record labels such as RCA Victor ceased recording regional Chicano music, concentrating instead on larger "authentic" Hispanic markets in major metropolitan areas such as Mexico City. Marroquín owned a large number of jukeboxes in cantinas and other public places frequented by those of Hispanic culture. Tejanos (, ; singular: ''Tejano/a''; Spanish for "Texan", originally borrowed from the Caddo ''tayshas'') are the residents of the state of Texas who are culturally descended from the Mexican population of Tejas and Coahuila that lived in the region prior to it becoming what is now known as the state of Texas before it became a U.S. state in 1845. The term is also sometimes applied to all Texans of Mexican descent. The original word Tejano, with a "J" not an "X', comes from the indigenous Caddo people's language, from the word ''tayshas'', in which the word means "friend" or "ally", a title given to the indigenous population that moved northward by early Aztec and Spanish rulers and combined forces, including, but not limited to, the Lipan N'de Apache People, Coahuiltecas, and Huasteca indigenous people from Zacatecas. San Benito is a city in Cameron County, Texas, United States. Its population was 24,250 at the 2010 census. On April 3, 2007, San Benito celebrated the 100th anniversary of its naming. The post office was named "Diaz" from April to May 1907. The San Benito Museum, Freddy Fender Museum, and Conjunto Music Museum opened in the same building on November 17, 2007.
