An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Bobby Shriver
Robert Sargent Shriver III (born April 28, 1954) is an American activist, attorney, and journalist. He was a member of the Santa Monica City Council from 2004 to 2012, serving as mayor pro tem in 2006 and as mayor during part of 2010. Mike Feinstein
Mike Feinstein is an American politician and a member of the Green Party. Feinstein has been involved in political activism since 1988, after he attended a conference at the Findhorn community in Scotland entitled "The Individual and the Collective: Politics as If The Earth Mattered". He first became active with the Westside Greens in the Santa Monica/West Los Angeles area in November 1988 and then joined his neighborhood Ocean Park Community Organization in early 1989. Ruth Yannatta Goldway (born September 17, 1945) is a member of the Postal Regulatory Commission, and served as its chairman from 2009-2014. Nathaniel Trives (born 1934/1935) is an American politician who served as the first African-American mayor of Santa Monica, California, a town then 95 percent white. Trives is a former Santa Monica police officer who served on the Santa Monica City Council from 1971 to 1979. He was President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was a board member of the Screen Actors Guild. Juan José Carrillo (September 8, 1842 – March 30, 1916) was a Californio politician and judge, who served as Mayor of Santa Monica and as the last City Marshal of Los Angeles. Biography Carrillo was born in Santa Barbara to Pedro Carlos Antonio Carrillo (1818–1888) and Maria Josefa Bandini (1823–1896).
