Santa Maria degli Angeli is a Gothic-style, Roman Catholic church located on Via Provesi #39 in Busseto, region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. History The church and the adjacent Franciscan convent were erected between 1470 and 1474, under the patronage of the Pallavicini. Inside, in a rocaille Niche is sheltered the terracotta statues of ''Grieving over the Dead Christ'' (1476–77) by Guido Mazzoni. Other works are a ''Deposition'' (circa 1543-44) by Nicolò dell'Abate and a ''Madonna and Franciscan Saints'' (1580 cc) by Antonio Campi Antonio Campi (c. 1522 – 1587) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance. Gothic architecture (or pointed architecture) is an architectural style that was prevalent in Europe from the late 12th to the 16th century, during the High and Late Middle Ages, surviving into the 17th and 18th centuries in some areas. Its history has very ancient roots which date back to the 10th century, and for almost five hundred years it was the capital of Stato Pallavicino, which eventually became part of the Duchy of Parma. It is believed that the town's name derives from "buxus" (meaning boxwood) or, in another form, as "busetum" (an enclosure for oxen). In the first half of the thirteenth century, it was completely rebuilt and surrounded by a moat and a drawbridge linking it to the square. Guido Mazzoni (sculptor)
Guido Mazzoni (c. 1445 – 1518, active 1473–1518) was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, mainly in terracotta, and painter of the Renaissance period, working in Bologna, Naples, and France. He is also sometimes referred to as ''Il Modanino''. Biography Guido Mazzoni was born in Modena and first became active in that city, ruled at the time by the Este family of Ferrara. A case has been made for his early training in the studio of Francesco Cossa. His earliest recorded work appears in 1473, when he made theatrical masks and props for the Duke of Ferrara's wedding. He is known to have continued such ephemera of court life throughout his career, but is most famous for his ultra-realistic terracotta sculpture. Antonio Campi (c. 1522 – 1587) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance. He was born in Cremona. His style merges Lombard with Mannerist styles. In Cremona, his extended family was the foundation of the Cremonese school of painting. Giulio Campi and Antonio were reportedly half-brothers, while Vincenzo Campi was a full brother.
