Santa Maria Novella is a Romanesque architecture, Romanesque-style, Roman Catholic parish church located on Via Pisani #45 in the village (''frazione'') of Marti, Montopoli in Val d'Arno, Marti, in the town limits of Montopoli in Val d'Arno, in the province of Pisa, region of Tuscany, Italy. History and Decoration A church at the site was begun in 1332. Built with brick, the exterior has an austere and rustic with some pilasters and blind arches. The single nave was refurbished in the 18th century, when it was frescoed by Anton Domenico Bamberini. It also has frescoes depicting the ''Baptism of Christ''. There are altarpieces by Matteo Rosselli (''St Peter healing the Lame'', 1558) and by Taddeo Naldini (''Resurrection''). Anton Domenico Bamberini
Anton Domenico Bamberini (1666–1741) was an Italian painter, mainly of religious Baroque frescoes in churches completed in a heavily ornamented and stuccoed '' trompe-l'œil'' frames and settings. Biography Bamberini was born in Florence. He was a pupil of the painter Simone Pignoni, and most of his works were completed in Florence and surrounding towns. In 1710, he frescoed the cupola of the church of Santa Cristiana in Santa Croce sull'Arno, depicting the ''Assumption of the Virgin''. The cloister was destroyed during World War Two, and the frescoes that could be rescued, depicting events in the life of St Francis, were reassembled. In 1734–1735, along with Gaetano Castellani and Mauro Soderini, he frescoed the walls of the cloister of St Francis in San Casciano in Val di Pesa. Matteo Rosselli (10 August 1578 – 18 January 1650) was an Italian painter of the late Florentine Counter- Mannerism and early Baroque. He is best known however for his highly populated grand-manner historical paintings. Biography He first apprenticed with Gregorio Pagani. On 26 February 1599, he was inducted to the Accademia del Disegno, and in 1605 traveled to Rome to work with Domenico Passignano for six months. Ferdinando Tacca
Ferdinando Tacca (1619–1686) was an Italian sculptor and architect, active during the Baroque period in Florence. Biography He was the son of Pietro Tacca, a sculptor active for the Medici in Florence. After Pietro's death in 1640, Ferdinado inherited his studio and bronze foundry in Borgo Pinti, where he produced both large equestrian monuments, statuary, and smaller-scale works for both local and foreign patrons. He helped complete in 1640 the bronze ''Equestrian Statue of King Philip IV of Spain'' in Madrid. He created the Crucifix for the Cathedral of Prato and the ''Fontana di Bacchino'', located in the city's main piazza.
