Santa Maria Independent School District is a public school district based in the community of Santa Maria, Texas, United States. In addition to Santa Maria, the district serves the communities of Bluetown and Iglesia Antigua. Santa Maria ISD has three campuses - Santa Maria High School (grades 9-12), Santa Maria Middle (grades 5-8), and Tony Gonzalez Elementary (prekindergarten - grade 4). As of 2007, the Texas State Energy Conservation Office awards Santa Maria ISD money due to the ''colonias'' served by the district. In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is the branch of the government of Texas responsible for public education in Texas in the United States.

Santa Maria is a census-designated place (CDP) in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 733 at the 2010 census, down from 846 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Brownsville– Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Santa Maria is located near the southwest corner of Cameron County at (26.077955, -97.847926). U.S. Route 281 passes through, leading southeast to Brownsville and west to Hidalgo. The community is about one mile north of the Rio Grande, which forms the Mexico–United States border.
