Santa Maria, Serrateix
Santa Maria de Serrateix is the Romanesque church of a former Benedictine abbey located on the BV-4235 road in Serrateix in the comarca of Berguedà, Catalonia. History The monastery dates to c. 940 when a group of monks settled in the area. From 977, it came under the protection of the Counts of Cerdanya and Besalú while Froila became the abbot (977-993). Housing 13 monks, it later received donations from Oliba Cabreta (whose sarcophagus lies here) and his brother Miró. A new church built in 1077 was consecrated in 1126. In the fourteenth century, while only six monks were living there, the bell tower was destroyed but was rebuilt under the abbot Berenguer de Lluçà in 1373. The monastery later came under the authority of the Bishop of Urgell. The church was rebuilt in the Neoclassical style between 1798 and 1827. Viver I Serrateix
Viver i Serrateix is a municipality in the comarca of Berguedà, Catalonia. It comprises the towns of ''Viver'' and ''Serrateix'', as per the name. History Santa Maria de Serrateix was established in 940. Viver and Serrateix was formerly controlled by the Barons of Viver, who had their castle and seat in the town. The barons retained possession of the municipality's lands until the 17th century, when they sold it to the Rajadell family. The municipality was created when the two towns were united in the 19th century. Soon thereafter, the towns of ''Mondarn'' and ''Pujol de Planes'' were also added to the united municipality. Culture The current parochial church of the municipality is what was formerly the Monastery of Santa Maria de Serrateix. It is Romanesque in style, and contains one of its three original apses. Ado of Vienne ( la, Ado Viennensis, french: Adon de Vienne; died 16 December 874) was archbishop of Vienne in Lotharingia from 850 until his death and is venerated as a saint. He belonged to a prominent Frankish family and spent much of his early adulthood in Italy.
