Santa Cruz (; "Holy Cross") is a municipality, a parish and a city in the eastern part of the island of Madeira. It is the second most populous municipality, behind Funchal. Madeira Island
Madeira is a Portuguese island, and is the largest and most populous of the Madeira Archipelago. It has an area of , including Ilhéu de Agostinho, Ilhéu de São Lourenço, Ilhéu Mole (northwest). As of 2011, Madeira had a total population of 262,456. The island is the top of a massive submerged shield volcano that rises about from the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. Vânia Jesus (born 1979) is a Portuguese politician. A member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), she represented the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal between 2009 and 2011. Early life Vânia Andrea de Castro Jesus was born in Santa Cruz, Madeira on 17 January 1979. João Rodrigues (sailor)
João Filipe Gaspar Rodrigues (born 2 November 1971) is a Portuguese windsurfer. He competed in every Summer Olympic Games from 1992 to 2016 with the best result of sixth place in 2004. Rodrigues started sailing aged nine and racing competitively at the age of eleven; in 1987 he was included to the national team. In 1995, he won his first major title at the Mistral World Championships, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The same year he also graduated from a five-year course in engineering and was awarded the Nobre Guedes Olympic Medal by the Portuguese Olympic Committee. José Manuel Coelho
José Manuel da Mata Vieira Coelho (born 22 July 1952, in Gaula, Santa Cruz) is a Portuguese politician. He was a member of the Portuguese Communist Party until 1999, and still calls himself a communist "who evolved". He was a substitute deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira for the New Democracy Party, taking office in 2008. He became famous for the incident in which he showed a Nazi flag to the assembly as a protest against the Social Democratic Party refusing to commemorate the Carnation Revolution, among several other episodes as well. Coelho was the New Democracy's candidate to the presidency in the 2011 election. Joseph Costa (February 22, 1909 – November 11, 1998) was a Portuguese American aviator who had an airport named after him and received a number of American awards for his contributions to aviation. In 1936 he attempted a flight from the United States to Portugal. Early life Joseph Costa was born as José Costa in Caniço on Madeira Island on 22 February 1909. He was aged six when his parents emigrated to the United States, taking him along. The Costas settled in Corning, New York. He became known as Joseph Costa, Joseph A. Costa or Joe Costa.
