Sankalp-class Offshore Patrol Vessel
''Sankalp''-class offshore patrol vessels are a series of two offshore patrol vessels designed and built by Goa Shipyard Limited for the Indian Coast Guard. The vessels, also classified as Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessels, are the largest vessels constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited. ''Samarth'' class and ''Saryu'' class were derived from this class of offshore patrol vessels. History In March 2004, the Indian Coast Guard placed an order for a single Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel at a cost of . Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is an Government of India, Indian Government owned ship building company located on the West Coast of India at Vasco da Gama, Goa. It was established in 1957, originally by the colonial government of the Portuguese in India as the "Estaleiros Navais de Goa", to build barges to be used in Goa's growing mining industry, which took off after the establishment of India's blockade of Goa in 1955. In the wake of Portugal's defeat and unconditional surrender to India following the 1961 Indian annexation of Goa, it was requisitioned to manufacture warships for the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. In marine propulsion, a variable-pitch propeller is a type of propeller with blades that can be rotated around their long axis to change the blade pitch. Reversible propellers—those where the pitch can be set to negative values—can also create reverse thrust for braking or going backwards without the need to change the direction of shaft revolution. A controllable pitch propeller (CPP) can be efficient for the full range of rotational speeds and load conditions, since its pitch will be varied to absorb the maximum power that the engine is capable of producing. When fully loaded, a vessel will need more propulsion power than when empty. By varying the propeller blades to the optimal pitch, higher efficiency can be obtained, thus saving fuel.
