Sang Chul Lee
Sang Chul Lee (February 29, 1924 – January 28, 2017) was the 32nd Moderator of the United Church of Canada and the first person of Asian descent to hold the position. He was elected by the 32nd General Council of the United Church of Canada at their meeting in Victoria, British Columbia. He was married and had three daughters. Early life Lee was born in 1924 to Korean immigrant parents in Siberia during the reign of Joseph Stalin. At the age of seven, his family moved to Japanese-occupied Manchuria, where he attended a mission high school operated by Canadian missionaries, and against the wishes of his parents - who were devout Shamans - he converted to Christianity. After World War II, Lee moved to South Korea. Lee saw Christianity as a way to cope with the brutality he had experienced in both Manchuria and Korea and was particularly enthralled with the Exodus story of Moses and the Israelites. The Moderator of the United Church of Canada is the most senior elected official within the United Church of Canada. He or she may be a lay person or a member of the Order of Ministry and is elected to a three-year term by commissioners attending the church's triannual General Council. The current Moderator is the Right Reverend Dr. Carmen Lansdowne, who was elected to the office at the 44th General Council in July 2022, and installed on August 7, 2022. Jordan Cantwell
Jordan Cantwell (born 1967) was the Moderator of the United Church of Canada from 2015 to 2018. She was ordained as a minister of the United Church in 2010, and was elected to the position of Moderator at the 42nd General Council of the church in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, in 2015. Life Cantwell was born in New York in 1967; when she was in grade two, the family moved to the Canadian Prairies. Her mother being Methodist and her father Roman Catholic, she was raised in the Anglican church, but left it when she was in her twenties. Cantwell became involved in social justice issues such as the anti-apartheid movement of the late 1980s, and in 1993, the United Church of Canada sent her to South Africa as an international observer through the World Council of Churches.
