Sandra Ung
Sandra Ung (, born September 13, 1974) is a Cambodian-born American attorney and politician from New York City. She is a member of the New York City Council for the 20th district, which is based in Flushing, Queens. Early life and education Ung was born in Cambodia to ethnically Chinese parents. Her family fled to Taiwan soon after she was born to escape the Cambodian genocide, and immigrated to the United States when Ung was seven years old. After growing up in Flushing, Queens, Ung attended Hunter College for her undergraduate degree, and went on to receive her JD from Columbia Law School in 2001. New York City Council
The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of New York City. It has 51 members from 51 council districts throughout the five Borough (New York City), boroughs. The council serves as a check against the Mayor of New York City, mayor in a mayor-council government model, the performance of city agencies land use decisions, and legislating on a variety of other issues. It also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget. Cambodian Genocide
The Cambodian genocide ( km, របបប្រល័យពូជសាសន៍នៅកម្ពុជា) was the systematic persecution and killing of Cambodians by the Khmer Rouge under the leadership of Communist Party of Kampuchea general secretary Pol Pot, who radically pushed Cambodia towards an entirely self-sufficient agrarian socialist society. Ellen Young (politician)
Ellen Young (; born 1952) is an American Democratic Party politician who represented the 22nd assembly district in the New York State Assembly. She was elected in 2006 to represent Flushing, Queens. She is currently the Chairwoman & CEO for the United Nations Global Peace Development Foundation. She lost in the 2008 primary for reelection to Grace Meng. The election was hotly contested as Young was supported by John Liu (current New York State Senator) and Meng was supported by her father, previous Assemblyman Jimmy Meng. Young came to New York at the age of 25 from Taiwan after graduating from Takming College in Taipei. She became the first Asian woman elected to the state legislature. An absentee ballot is a vote cast by someone who is unable or unwilling to attend the official polling station to which the voter is normally allocated. Instant-runoff voting (IRV) is a type of ranked preferential voting method. It uses a majority voting rule in single-winner elections where there are more than two candidates. 2021 New York City Council Election
The 2021 New York City Council election were held on November 2, 2021. The primary elections were held on June 22, 2021. There were several special elections for seats vacated in 2020 and early 2021; these special elections were the first to use ranked-choice voting in city council elections after it was approved by a ballot question in 2019. Due to redistricting after the 2020 Census, candidates also ran for two-year terms instead of four-year terms for the first time, stemming from the New York City Charter overhaul in 1989. John Liu
John Chun Yah Liu (born January 8, 1967) is an American politician in New York City. A member of the Democratic Party, he is a member of the New York State Senate for the 11th district in northeast Queens. New York City Comptroller
The Office of Comptroller of New York City, a position established in 1801, is the chief financial officer and chief auditor of the city agencies and their performance and spending. Jimmy Meng
Jimmy Kuang Zui Meng (, born 1944) is a Chinese-Taiwanese American former politician, who served as a member of the New York State Assembly. A Democrat, Meng represented the 22nd Assembly District in Flushing, Queens from 2005 to 2006. He is the first Asian American to have served in the New York State Legislature.
