Sandgerðisbær () is a former Icelandic municipality located in southwestern Iceland on the Southern Peninsula (Iceland), Southern Peninsula. In 2018 it merged with Garður to create the new municipality of Suðurnesjabær. 29 Dec 2018. Sandgerði began to develop as a fishing village in the second half of the nineteenth century when motorboats took over the rowing boats. The land area of Sandgerðisbær is covers the entire western coast of Miðnes (Romshvalanes) north from Garðskagi to Ósabotnar in the south. Inland the land area of Sandgerðisbær stretches into the international airport at Keflavíkurflugvöllur with the air terminal within the municipal boundaries. Southern Peninsula (Iceland)
Southern Peninsula ( is, Suðurnes ) is an administrative unit and part of Reykjanesskagi (pronounced ), or Reykjanes Peninsula, a region in southwest Iceland. It was named after Reykjanes, the southwestern tip of Reykjanesskagi. The region has a population of 27,829 (2020) and is one of the more densely populated parts of the island. The administrative centre is Keflavík, which had 7,000 residents when it merged with the nearby town of Njarðvík and Hafnir in 1995 to create Reykjanesbær, which is the largest settlement outside the Greater Reykjavík area; in 2018 the region had a population of 17,805. Garður () is a former municipality and town located in southwestern Iceland, bordered by the Faxaflói, Faxaflói Bay on the Southern Peninsula (Iceland), Southern Peninsula. In 2018 it merged with Sandgerði to create the new municipality of Suðurnesjabær. The town Garður, which means ''garden'' or ''yard'', was named after one of the many earthen walls once erected on the boundaries between local properties.
