Sandesh (confectionery)
Sandesh ( bn, সন্দেশ ''Shôndesh'') is a dessert, originating from the Bengal region in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent, created with milk and sugar. Some recipes of ''sandesh'' call for the use of chhena or paneer (which is made by curdling the milk and separating the whey from it) instead of milk itself. Some people in the region of Dhaka make a form of ''sandesh'' called ''pranahara'' (literally 'heart stealer') which is softer and made with ''mawa'' and yogurt. The Gupo/Gufo style of ''sandesh'' from Guptipara is considered by some to be the "first branded sweet of Bengal". History A sweet dish by the name ''sandesh'' is mentioned in medieval Bengali literature, including Krittibas' Ramayana and lyrics of Chaitanya. However, the ingredients of this original dish are not known. This dish was most likely different from the modern chhena-based sandesh, which is made of solidified kheer. ''Sandesh'' ( bn, সন্দেশ, ) is a Bengali children's magazine. It was first published by Upendrakishore Ray in 1913 through his publishing company, M/s U. Ray and Sons. The original partners of the venture were Upendrakishore and his sons Sukumar and Subinoy. Its publication had to be stopped twice. The current phase is the third and longest running one, spanning more than 59 years. Beginning The magazine was first published from its office in 22, Sukeas Street. Subsequently the office and the press were shifted to the new building built by Upendrakishore at 100, Garpar Road. Upendrakishore's son Sukumar Ray went to Great Britain for advanced training in printing technology, and he joined as an active partner after his return. After the death of Upendrakishore Roychowdhury in 1915, his eldest son Sukumar Ray succeeded as the editor of the magazine in 1915. Sukumar was known for his humorous writings.
