San Sebastiano, Siena
San Sebastiano in Vallepiatta is an ancient church next to Piazzeta della Selva in Siena, Italy. It is located in the Contrada della Selva. Church construction began in 1492 and completed in 1656, under the patronage of the guild of weavers (Tessitori). The interior is frescoed by 16th century painters, depicting ''Dream of St Irene'' by Stefano Volpi, a ''Glory of St Sebastian'' and a ''Virtue and Angels'' by Sebastiano Folli, a ''Stories of St Sebastian'' by Pietro Sorri and Rutilio Manetti. On the main altar there is a ''Spoliation of Christ'' by Luigi Ademollo, and a 15th-century ''Crucifix'', which legend holds was donated to the ''Compagnia di San Giovanni Battista della Morte'' (Company of St John the Baptist of the Death) by St Bernard himself. Luigi Ademollo
Luigi Ademollo (April 30, 1764 – February 11, 1849) was an Italian painter. Biography He was born in Milan. He studied at the Brera Academy, where he was taught by Giulio Traballesi, Giocondo Albertolli, and Giuseppe Piermarini. He left Milan in 1783 and traveled and worked in Rome and Florence. He married Margaret Cimballi Ferrara in Rome in 1792 and had several children. Ademollo primarily painted frescoes with biblical scenes from the Old and New Testaments. In 1789 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He painted in theaters, including the decoration of sipari (theater curtains). He helped fresco the Royal Chapel in the Pitti Palace and also the churches of Santissima Annunziata and Sant'Ambrogio. In Siena, he painted frescoes for the Palazzo Venturi Gallerani and Palazzo Segardi. He died in Florence in 1849. Raffaello Vanni (1590 ca-1673) was an Italian painter of the Baroque. Biography He was born at Siena. He first trained with his father, Francesco Vanni, who died in 1610. He was afterwards sent to Rome, and recommended to the care of Antonio Carracci. He became a follower of the style of Pietro da Cortona. Francesco Di Giorgio Martini
Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1439–1501) was an Italian architect, engineer, painter, sculptor, and writer. As a painter, he belonged to the Sienese School. He was considered a visionary architectural theorist—in Nikolaus Pevsner's terms: "one of the most interesting :Italian architects, later Quattrocento architects". As a military engineer, he executed architectural designs and sculptural projects and built almost seventy fortifications for the Federico da Montefeltro, Federico da Montefeltro, Count (later Duke) of Urbino, building city walls and early examples of Star fort, star-shaped fortifications. Bernard of Clairvaux, O. Cist. ( la, Bernardus Claraevallensis; 109020 August 1153), venerated as Saint Bernard, was an abbot, mystic, co-founder of the Knights Templars, and a major leader in the reformation of the Benedictine Order through the nascent Cistercian Order. He was sent to found Clairvaux Abbey at an isolated clearing in a glen known as the ''Val d'Absinthe'', about southeast of Bar-sur-Aube. In the year 1128, Bernard attended the Council of Troyes, at which he traced the outlines of the Rule of the Knights Templar, which soon became an ideal of Christian nobility. Rutilio di Lorenzo Manetti (c. 1571 – 22 July 1639) was an Italian painter of late-Mannerism or proto-Baroque, active mainly in Siena. Biography He was influenced and/or taught by the local artists Francesco Vanni and Ventura Salimbeni. He is known to have collaborated with Raffaello Vanni, the son of Francesco. Pietro Sorri (1558-1622) was an Italian painter active in Siena. Biography He first studied under Arcangelo Salimbeni (father of Ventura), and afterwards under Cavaliere Domenico Passignano, whom he accompanied to Venice. Several of his works are in Florence and other cities of Tuscany, particularly at Pisa; he painted landscapes and portraits as well as history. Among his pupils were Giovanni Stefano Rossi, Bernardo Strozzi, and Astolfo Petrozzi. He was also active in Lucca, Genoa, Milan, and Pavia.
