San Domenico, Catania
San Domenico, also called Santa Maria la Grande is a Roman Catholic church and active convent located on piazza San Domenico in the quartiere di Santa Maria la Grande, in Catania, region of Sicily, Italy. The church stands about two blocks north of the church of Sant'Agata la Vetere on via Santa Maddalena. The neoclassical architecture, neoclassical-style, late 17th-century church houses a few prominent altarpieces that survived the 1693 catastrophe in Catania. History and Description The Dominican order had arrived to Catania by the 13th century. By 1313 they had a church and convent near the site of the Castello Ursino. Wishing to clear the space adjacent to the castle, by 1405, King Martin I of Sicily, had the monastery razed, and the priests were granted a palace seized from Blasco de Alagona, and the adjacent church at this site called ''Santa Maria la Grande'', dedicated to the Marian veneration of Santa Maria ad Nives centered around Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. Bernardo Scammacca
Bernardo Scammacca, OP (1430 – 11 January 1487) was an Italian Catholic priest and member of the Order of Preachers. After leading a dissolute early life, his conversion after a sustaining a wound from a duel led him down the path toward religious life. He became a noted prophet and spent hours in the confessional. Scammacca was beatified on 8 March 1825 after Pope Leo XII confirmed his 'cultus' (or local devotion). Life Bernardo Scammacca was born in 1430 in Catania to upper-class and pious parents. Scammacca was well-educated in his childhood. Despite his education he spent his adolescence as a wild and dissolute man and during one such revel he received a leg wound in a duel with a man with whom he had quarreled. Antoninus of Florence (1 March 13892 May 1459), was an Italian Dominican friar, who ruled as an archbishop of Florence. He is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church. Life He was born Antonio Pierozzi (also called de Forciglioni) on 1 March 1389 in the city of Florence, then capital of an independent Republic, to Niccolò and Tomasina Pierozzi, prominent citizens of the city, Niccolò being a notary. Ambrose of Sienna was an Italian Dominican teacher, missionary and diplomat. Biography Ambrose was born at Siena on 16 April 1220, to the noble family of Sansedoni. When he was around a year old, Ambrose was cured of a congenital deformity, in the Dominican church of St. Mary Magdalene. As a child and youth he was noted for his love of charity, exercised especially towards pilgrims, the sick in hospitals, and prisoners. He entered the novitiate of the Dominican convent in his native city at the age of seventeen, was sent to Paris to continue his philosophical and theological studies under Albert the Great and had for a fellow-student there, Thomas Aquinas. Agnes of Montepulciano (28 January 1268 – 20 April 1317) was a Dominican prioress in medieval Tuscany, who was known as a miracle worker during her lifetime. She is honored as a saint by the Catholic Church. Life Agnes was born in 1268 into the noble Segni family in Gracciano, a frazione of Montepulciano, then part of the Papal States. At the age of nine, she convinced her parents to allow her to enter a Franciscan monastery of women in the city known as the "Sisters of the Sack", after the rough religious habit they wore. They lived a simple, contemplative life. She received the permission of the pope to be accepted into this life at such a young age, which was normally against Church law. Giacinto Platania (Acireale, circa 1612 - 1691) was an Italian painter. Biography He first trained with his father Antonio, who in 1630 painted a ''Guardian Angel'' for the Cathedral of Acireale. Platania left record of the 1669 Etna eruption, depicting the event in frescoes in the sacristy of the Cathedral of Catania, that unfortunately have suffered damage and poor restorations. They document efforts he helped plan, including processions and prayers, that were only partially effective in attempting to steer the lava away from the town.
