San Antonio, New Mexico
San Antonio is a census-designated place in Socorro County, New Mexico, United States, roughly in the center of the state, on the Rio Grande. The entire population of the county is approximately 18,000. Description San Antonio is partly agricultural, and partly a bedroom community for Socorro and White Sands Missile Range. The city supports a few small businesses, which include the original Owl Bar and Cafe (featured on an episode of the Travel Channel's ''Burger Land'' in 2013), The Buckhorn Tavern (featured in 2009 on the Food Network's ''Throwdown! with Bobby Flay'',), San Antonio Crane, a restaurant featuring Mexican food, a seasonal roadside market, and a general store. ''Throwdown! with Bobby Flay'' is a Food Network television program in which celebrity chef Bobby Flay challenges cooks renowned for a specific dish or type of cooking to a cook-off of their signature dish. Socorro High School is the only public high school in Socorro, New Mexico, and the only high school in the Socorro Consolidated School District. As of 2017, the school reported 461 students. The school district, which has Socorro HS as its only comprehensive high school, includes Socorro, Alamillo, Chamizal, Escondida, Lemitar, Luis Lopez, Polvadera, San Acacia, San Antonio, and San Antonito. Trinity (nuclear Test)
Trinity was the code name of the first detonation of a nuclear weapon. It was conducted by the United States Army at 5:29 a.m. on July 16, 1945, as part of the Manhattan Project. The test was conducted in the Jornada del Muerto desert about southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, on what was then the USAAF Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range, now part of White Sands Missile Range. Conrad Hilton
Conrad Nicholson Hilton Sr. (December 25, 1887 – January 3, 1979) was an American businessman who founded the Hilton Hotels chain. From 1912 to 1916 Hilton was a Republican representative in the first New Mexico Legislature, but became disillusioned with the "inside deals" of politics. He purchased his first hotel in 1919 for $40,000, the Mobley Hotel in Cisco, Texas, which capitalized on the oil boom. The rooms were rented out in 8 hour shifts. He continued to buy and sell hotels and eventually established the world's first international hotel chain. When he died in 1979, he left the bulk of his estate to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.
