Samvel Karapetyan (general)
Samvel Jamili Karapetyan (; born September 11, 1962), also known by his nom de guerre Oganovsky, is an Armenian military commander from the Republic of Artsakh who participated in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. He holds the rank of major general in the Artsakh Defense Army and has received the award Hero of Artsakh. Biography Samvel Karapetyan was born on September 11, 1962 in Stepanakert in the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, then a part of the Azerbaijan SSR. He served in the Soviet military from 1981 to 1983. He participated in the Karabakh movement to unite Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia and in the defense of Armenian settlements from 1988. During the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, Karapetyan became commander of the Central Defense District (a regiment based in Stepanakert) of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Defense Army. Horadiz
Horadiz is a city and municipality in the Fuzuli District of Azerbaijan, located on the left bank of the Aras river. As of 2019, it had a population of 7,600 people. History During the Russian Empire, the village of Horadiz was part of the Jebrail Uyezd of Elisabethpol Governorate. According to the "Caucasian calendar" of 1912, the village had 1,424 inhabitants, the majority of whom were Azerbaijanis, who were listed as "Tatars" in the calendar. Horadiz was designated as an urban-type settlement on 24 September 1947. It had a population of 5,689 people according to the 1989 Soviet census. During the First Nagorno-Karabakh war the village became the scene of fierce fighting. On 24 October 1993, the village of Horadiz was captured by Armenian forces, which was condemned by UN Security Council Resolution No. 884 of 12 November 1993 and labelled as an occupation. Renaissance Square (), known commonly as Veratsnound or Revival Square is the main square in Stepanakert, the capital of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh. It was built in 1994 following the Battle of Shushi and the securing of the area by the Artsakh Defense Army. Robert Sedraki Kocharyan ( hy, Ռոբերտ Սեդրակի Քոչարյան ; born 31 August 1954) is an Armenian politician. He served as the President of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic from 1994 to 1997 and Prime Minister of Nagorno-Karabakh from 1992 to 1994. He served as the second President of Armenia between 1998 and 2008 and as Prime Minister of Armenia from 1997 to 1998. Kocharyan was elected president of Armenia twice, in 1998 and 2003; both presidential elections were held in two rounds. During most of his presidency, between 2001 and 2007, Armenia's economy grew on average by 12% annually, largely due to a construction boom. A series of anti-government riots took place in Armenia following presidential elections held on 19 February 2008. Protests broke out in the Armenian capital Yerevan, organized by supporters of presidential candidate and former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan and other opposition leaders. The protests began on 20 February, lasted for 10 days in Yerevan's Freedom Square, and involved tens of thousands of demonstrators during the day and hundreds camping out overnight. Battle Of Kalbajar
The Battle of Kalbajar took place in March and April 1993, during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. It resulted in the capture of the Kalbajar District of Azerbaijan by Armenian military forces. Kalbajar lies outside the contested enclave of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO). The offensive was the first time Armenian forces from Nagorno-Karabakh had advanced beyond the boundaries of the enclave (besides the capture of Lachin in 1992). Kalbajar District, located between Armenia and the western border of the former NKAO, was composed of several dozen villages and its provincial capital, also named Kalbajar. The Armenian side launched an attack from four directions, including Armenia proper.
