Samuel Liddell (fl. 1716) was a pirate, privateer, and merchant active in the Caribbean. He is best known for sailing alongside Henry Jennings. History Liddell had been master of the vessel ''Hannah'' as early as 1713, but was in the Caribbean by early 1716. In March of that year Governor Archibald Hamilton of Jamaica granted a privateering commission to Henry Jennings, who had just returned from plundering the wrecks of the previous years’ Spanish treasure fleet. He would be joined by fellow captains Samuel Liddell in the ''Cocoa Nut'', James Carnegie in the sloop ''Discovery'', and Leigh Ashworth in the ''Mary''. Also aboard Jennings’ ship was future captain Charles Vane. The group initially headed back to the Spanish wrecks in April; Liddell was a merchant but the ''Cocoa Nut’''s Jamaican owners asked him to forego trading and loot the scattered Spanish silver instead. Bahía Honda is a municipality and town in the Artemisa Province of Cuba. Before 2011, the municipality belonged to Pinar del Río Province. Benjamin Hornigold
Captain Benjamin Hornigold (1680–1719) was an English pirate who operated during the tail end of the Golden Age of Piracy. Born in England in the late 17th century, Hornigold began his pirate career in 1713, attacking merchant ships in the Bahamas. He helped to establish the "Republic of Pirates" in Nassau and by 1717 was the captain of one of the most heavily armed ships in the region, called the ''Ranger''. It was at this time he appointed Edward Teach, best known in history books as "Blackbeard", as his second-in-command. Mindful not to attack British-led ships during his career, his crew eventually grew tired of the tactic and Hornigold was voted out as captain. In December 1718, Hornigold accepted a King's Pardon for his crimes and became a pirate hunter, pursuing his former allies on behalf of the Governor of the Bahamas, Woodes Rogers. Captain Samuel Bellamy ( c. 23 February, 1689 – 26 April 1717), later known as "Black Sam" Bellamy, was an English sailor, turned pirate, who operated in the early 18th century. He is best known as the wealthiest pirate in recorded history, and one of the faces of the Golden Age of Piracy. Charles Vane
Charles Vane (c. 1680 – 29 March 1721) was an English pirate who operated in the Bahamas during the end of the Golden Age of Piracy. Vane was likely born in the Kingdom of England around 1680. One of his first pirate ventures was under the leadership of Henry Jennings, during Jennings' attack on the salvage camp for the wrecked Spanish 1715 Treasure Fleet off the coast of Florida. Privateer
A privateer is a private person or ship that engages in maritime warfare under a commission of war. Since robbery under arms was a common aspect of seaborne trade, until the early 19th century all merchant ships carried arms. A sovereign or delegated authority issued commissions, also referred to as a letter of marque, during wartime. The commission empowered the holder to carry on all forms of hostility permissible at sea by the usages of war. This included attacking foreign vessels and taking them as prizes, and taking prize crews as prisoners for exchange.
