Samuel Ernest Hodgetts (28 October 1877 – 1944) was a British gymnast who competed in the 1908, 1912 and 1920 Summer Olympics. He was born in Birmingham, West Midlands Birmingham ( ) is a city and metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of West Midlands in England. It is the second-largest city in the United Kingdom with a population of 1.145 million in the city proper, 2.92 million in the West .... In 1908 he participated in the individual all-around competition and finished eighth. He was part of the British team, which won the bronze medal in the gymnastics men's team, European system event in 1912. In the individual all-around competition he finished 25th. Gymnastics At The Summer Olympics
Gymnastics events have been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens. For 32 years, only men were allowed to compete. Beginning at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, women were allowed to compete in artistic gymnastics events as well.
