Samuel Chidley
Samuel Chidley (1616–c. 1672) was an English Puritan activist and controversialist. A radical Ecclesiastical separatism, separatist in London before and during the English Civil War, he became a leading Leveller, a treasurer of the movement. A public servant and land speculator under the Commonwealth of England, Commonwealth and The Protectorate, Protectorate, he became rich and campaigned for social, moral and financial reform. He was ruined by the Restoration (England), Restoration and returned to live in relative poverty in his native Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury ( , also ) is a market town, civil parish, and the county town of Shropshire, England, on the River Severn, north-west of London; at the 2021 census, it had a population of 76,782.
