Samson is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia in the City of Fremantle. Samson is bounded by South Street to the north, Stock Road to the west, Winterfold Road to the south, South Street to the north and east no further than Rushby and McMahon Ways. The suburb comprises fewer than 40 streets and 800 homes. The suburb of Samson was named after the Samson family who have been prominent in the Fremantle area for two centuries, including Sir Frederick Samson who served as mayor for over 20 years. City Of Fremantle
The City of Fremantle is a local government area in the south of Perth, Western Australia. The City covers an area of , and lies about southwest of the Perth central business district. History The City of Fremantle is named after Charles Fremantle, who in 1829 claimed for George IV "all that part of New Holland (Australia) which is not included within the territory of New South Wales", but who was also charged just three years earlier in April 1826 with raping a 15-year-old girl. In 1848 a town trust was formed comprising a chairman and a committee of five. For the next twenty-three years they set about constructing roads and many public buildings with the use of convict labour. By 1870 the population of Fremantle had reached 3,796 and it was a moderately flourishing town, resulting in a move among the colonists to secure greater control of the management of their affairs. Kardinya is a suburb south-southwest of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. It is in the City of Melville local government area. It is predominantly a low-density residential suburb consisting of single-family detached homes. There is a commercial area in the centre of the suburb, with a shopping centre and several other shops. In the northwest is a small light industrial area. Kardinya has a population of 8,730 people. Hamilton Hill, Western Australia
Hamilton Hill is a suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, located southwest the central business district. Its local government area is the City of Cockburn. History The earliest known settler at Hamilton Hill was Sydney Smith, the agent of Captain George Robb. Robb arrived in Western Australia in 1830 and took up land south of Fremantle. During the next twelve months Smith was actively engaged in establishing Robb's farm. In a letter dated 27 August 1830, he gives his address as Hamilton Hill. The origin of the name, and whether it was Robb or Smith who did the naming, remains uncertain but the area has been known as such ever since. Coolbellup, Western Australia
Coolbellup is a suburb in Perth, Western Australia, located south of the central business district within the local government area of the City of Cockburn. Coolbellup takes its name from the Aboriginal name for the nearby North Lake, which the area was known as until 1957. History The original inhabitants were the Noongar people from the Swan River, who made their campsites along Perth's central lakes to avoid the salty lakes closer to the coast. Frederick Samson
Sir William Frederick Samson (12 January 1892 – 6 February 1974) was a businessman and long-term Mayor of Fremantle, Western Australia. Biography Samson was born at Fremantle, the second son of Michael Samson, and his wife Mary, née Murphy. He was educated at Christian Brothers College, Fremantle and later studied engineering at the University of Western Australia. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in 1915, but was declared medically unfit. In 1919 he contracted Spanish flu. He joined the Metropolitan Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Department and worked as a surveyor between 1918 and 1930. Samson established himself as a real-estate agent in 1931. His house, a well-known Fremantle landmark called "Samson House" was designed by Sir Talbot Hobbs and built by his father in 1888. Samson inherited the house (which he had been born in) in 1935. Lionel Samson
Lionel Samson (1799-15 March 1878) was an early Swan River Colony settler and businessman whose firm, Lionel Samson & Son, is the second oldest continuing family business in Australia. It is likely his father was Michael Samson, "a member of one of the old established and wealthy families of English Jewry", according to the Australian Dictionary of Biography. After studying at Oxford University and being a member of the London Stock Exchange he emigrated to Western Australia. Samson arrived at Fremantle in 1829 on the '' Calista'' and soon set up business as a wine and spirit merchant, importer, and auctioneer. He also engaged in whaling. He purchased Fremantle town lots 27 and 28 in the first state land sale. He was postmaster-general from 1830 to 1832. In 1835 he obtained the state's first liquor license. Bush Forever is a Western Australian government initiative and plan, aimed at preserving a "comprehensive, adequate and representative" 10 percent of each vegetation complex on the Swan Coastal Plain within the Perth metropolitan region.
