Sampaio Corrêa Futebol Clube, commonly referred to as Sampaio Corrêa, is a Brazilian professional club based in São Luís, Maranhão founded on 25 March 1923. It competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B, the second tier of Brazilian football, as well as in the Campeonato Maranhense, the top flight of the Maranhão state football league. The club's colors are yellow, green and red. Sampaio Corrêa's nickname is ''Bolivianos'' (meaning ''Bolivians'') because its colors are similar to the Bolivian ones. The club is also nicknamed ''Tricolor de Aço'' (meaning ''Steel Tricolour''). The club's mascot is a shark. The Estádio Governador João Castelo, also known as the Castelão, is a multi-purpose stadium inaugurated on March 9, 1975, in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, with a maximum capacity of 40,000 people in a three-tier configuration. The Copa CONMEBOL ( en, CONMEBOL Cup) was an annual football cup competition organized by CONMEBOL between 1992 and 1999 for South American football clubs. During its time of existence, it was a very prestigious South American club football contest, similar to the UEFA Cup. Clubs qualified for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions. Teams that were not able to qualify for the Copa Libertadores would play in this tournament. The tournament was played as a knockout cup.
