Samora Moisés Machel (29 September 1933 – 19 October 1986) was a Mozambican military commander and political leader. A socialist in the tradition of Marxism–Leninism, he served as the first President of Mozambique from the country's independence in 1975. Machel died in office in 1986 when his presidential aircraft crashed near the Mozambican-South African border. Early life Machel was born in the village of Madragoa (today's Chilembene), Gaza Province, Mozambique, to a family of farmers. His grandfather had been an active collaborator of Gungunhana. Under Portuguese rule, his father, like most Black Mozambicans, was classified by the demeaning term "indígena" (native). He was forced to accept lower prices for his crops than White farmers; compelled to grow labour-intensive cotton, which took time away from the food crops needed for his family; and forbidden to brand his mark on his cattle to prevent thievery. Julian Samora
Julian Samora (March 1, 1920 – February 2, 1996) was an American teacher, scholar and community activist who helped to pioneer the field of Latino Studies. Samora was the first Mexican-American to ever receive a doctorate in sociology; and, by the end of his academic career, he was named Professor Emeritus at the University of Notre Dame. He received numerous honors across his career, including the order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest honor Mexico bestows on non-Mexican citizens. Activism Samora is noted as an activist scholar in the Mexican-American community who fought for social justice for himself and his fellow Mexican-Americans. Samora Moses Goodson (born October 7, 1984) is an American football wide receiver who is currently a free agent. Early life and college career Goodson was born in San Jose, California, grew up in Hayward, California, and graduated from Hayward High School in 2002. At Hayward High, Goodson played basketball and only one year of football. Goodson then went to Citrus College, a community college in the Los Angeles suburb Glendora. Goodson showed medium interest in the Division I-A schools Nevada, Oregon State, San Diego State, and Washington, but none offered him a scholarship. In 2005, Goodson transferred to the Division I-AA Southeast Missouri State University. Samora Muhammad Yunis (Amharic: ሳሞራ መሐመድ ዩንስ) is an Ethiopian military officer. Born in the Tigray Region in the north of the country, Yunis rose to be a four-star general in the Ethiopian National Defence Forces and eventually Chief of the General Staff in 2001. He would serve until 2018. Biography Yunis fought for the military wing of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front, playing a leading role in the Battle of Shire (18–19 February 1989). Moran Khulu, better known as Samora Khulu, (died 6 August 2008) was a South African football (soccer) striker who played for African Wanderers, Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu. Club career Joe Frickleton discovered Khulu when he still played for African Wanderers in Durban. "I immediately spotted his potential while I was still coaching Highlands Park - and the great measure of success Chiefs achieved in the record breaking season was due to him."
