Sammy Thomson
Samuel Thomson (14 February 1862 – 23 December 1943) was a Scottish footballer. A Scotland international, he was a member of the Preston North End side which became known as " The Invincibles". Career Thomson was born at Lugar, Scotland on 14 February 1862. His first club was Lugar Boswell, and while with them he was twice picked to play for Scotland – the only serving Lugar player to have been selected for international duty. He later had a short spell with Rangers, before becoming one of the many Scottish-born footballers who joined Preston North End as the Lancashire club assembled a side that was almost unbeatable. Thomson signed for Preston North End in 1888. Playing as a winger, he made his League debut on 15 September 1888 at Dudley Road, the then home of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Lugar, East Ayrshire
Lugar is a small village in East Ayrshire, southwest Scotland. Lugar is in Auchinleck Parish, Kyle District, Ayrshire. It is ENE of Cumnock, and about from Cronberry and from Gaswater. Lugar was a station on the Mauchline and Muirkirk branch of the Glasgow and South Western Railway. Lugar is about SE of Kilmarnock. Lugar was once dominated by a large ironworks with several blast furnaces. Like the mining industry in nearby areas, though, the iron industry has been decimated by economic decline. The Lugar ironworks closed long ago. Lugar was built to accommodate the workers at the ironworks around 1845. They were housed in "''miners raws" (sic). On the 1860 Ordnance Survey Map the rows included ''Peesweip Row, Craigstonholm Row, Store Row, Back Row'' and ''Hollowholm Row''.(This map also shows a Curling Pond). The Scotland national football team is the joint-oldest international football team, having played in the first official international match, a goalless draw on 30 November 1872 against England. Since then, the team has established a long-standing rivalry with England, particularly in the annual British Home Championship, which Scotland won 24 times outright and shared a further 17 times. Preston () is a city on the north bank of the River Ribble in Lancashire, England. Deepdale is a football stadium in the Deepdale area of Preston, England, the home of Preston North End. Deepdale is "widely recognised as being the oldest 'continuously used' football stadium in the world, though this is contested". History The land on which the stadium stands was originally Deepdale Farm. It was leased on 21 January 1875 by the town's North End sports club and originally used for cricket and rugby. It hosted its first association football match on 5 October 1878. Old Deepdale As football grew in popularity, it became necessary to have raised areas, so the idea of football terracing was formed.
