Samantha Vithanage
Ovitigala Vithanage Samantha aka Samantha Vithanage (died 2002) was a third year Management student of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, who pioneered an anti-ragging campaign, and was killed on 7 November 2002 while in a discussion to stop the brutal practice of ragging in the faculty. His death was a landmark incident in the anti-ragging movement of Sri Lankan universities which provoked many students and academic staff of universities to act against ragging. On 7 November 2002, the anti-ragging campaigners sat down for a discussion with the pro-rag JVP controlled student council - ''General Students Union of University of Sri Jayawardanepura'' (Progressive Front), who defended the practice. Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP; ) is a Marxist–Leninist communist party and a former militant organization in Sri Lanka. The movement was involved in two armed uprisings against the government of Sri Lanka: once in 1971 (SLFP), and another in 1987–89 ( UNP). The motive for both uprisings was to establish a socialist state. The JVP was initially a small organisation that became a well-organised party that could influence mainstream politics. Its members campaigned openly for the left-wing coalition government, United Front. Following their disillusion with the coalition, they started an insurrection against the Dominion of Ceylon in early 1971, which intensified following the ban on the party. Vikramabahu Karunaratne ( si, වික්රමබාහු කරුණාරත්න, translit=Vikramabāhu Karuṇāratna; ta, விக்கிரமபாகு கருணாரத்தின, translit=Vikkiramapāku Karuṇārattiṉa; born 8 March 1943) is a Sri Lankan politician. He was a candidate in the 2010 presidential election. Early life Karunarathne was born on 8 March 1943 in Lunugala in present day south-east Sri Lanka. Both his parents were teachers. He received his primary education at Ananda Shasthralaya, Mathugama before going onto Ananda College, Colombo for his secondary education. Thereafter he went to the University of Ceylon from where he graduated with a first class honours in electrical engineering.
