Sam Sadigursky
Sam Sadigursky (born April 17, 1979) is a clarinetist, saxophonist, flutist and composer. Biography Early life Sam Sadigursky (born April 17, 1979) was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. His parents are both classically trained musicians from the former Soviet Union. His father Isaac Sadigursky is an accordionist and clarinetist who later became a piano technician, and his mother Raya Sadigursky is a classical pianist and piano teacher. He played piano briefly at an early age and then began playing saxophone at the age of 11 and then clarinet at age 15. In high school, Sadigursky was the recipient of the John Coltrane Young Artist Award, the NFAA YoungArts award, the Music Center Spotlight Awards, a member of the Grammy All-American High School Big Band, and toured Japan as part of the Monterey Jazz Festival All Stars. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. Jake Hanna
Jake Hanna (April 4, 1931 – February 12, 2010) was an American jazz drummer. He was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, United States. Hanna first performed in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the house drummer at Storyville nightclub in Boston, Massachusetts for a number of years in the 1950s and 1960s. He played with Toshiko Akiyoshi (1957), Maynard Ferguson (1958), Marian McPartland (1959–61), and Woody Herman's Orchestra (1962–64). He appears with the Mort Lindsey Orchestra on Judy Garland's multi Grammy Award-winning live album, ''Judy at Carnegie Hall'' (1961). He did extensive work as a studio musician both in and out of jazz, including a period as the drummer for the big band of the ''Merv Griffin Show'' (1964–75). Lev Zhurbin (born August 18, 1978 in Moscow, Soviet Union) is a composer and violist. Biography Lev Zhurbin immigrated to the United States in the year 1990. He is often credited simply as "Ljova", the diminutive of his formal name. He is the son of the composer Alexander Zhurbin and the poet/lyricist/writer Irena Ginzburg. Jamie Baum
Jamie Baum is an American jazz flautist. Career Baum grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut in a musical family. Her mother studied piano and trombone at Juilliard and her parents often took her to New York City for jazz concerts. Baum attended New England Conservatory of Music's Third Stream program, which combined jazz and classical music, but she switched to jazz and graduated from the jazz department. She studied with Jaki Byard. Years later she began the Yard Byard Project, consisting of scores she received from him when she was a student. She received a master's degree in jazz composition from the Manhattan School of Music and became part of the faculty in 2007. She has taught at the New School in New York City and given private lessons and workshops on composition, improvisation, and jazz flute. Judd Greenstein (born 1979) is an American composer of contemporary classical music, and an avid promoter of new music in New York City. He is also a co-director of New Amsterdam Records. Life and career Judd Greenstein was born and raised in Manhattan, and attended Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter College High School. Nico Asher Muhly (; born August 26, 1981) is an American contemporary classical music composer and arranger who has worked and recorded with both classical and pop musicians. A prolific composer, he has composed for many notable symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles and has had two operas commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera. Michael Leonhart (born April 21, 1974) is an American jazz trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist. Solo career In 1992 Leonhart was honored with the first Grammy Award for outstanding high school musician in the US (he attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School). He was the youngest Grammy recipient to date. He was 17 years old. In February of the same year ''ABC World News'' named him Person of the Week. Linda May Han Oh (born 25 August 1984) is an Australian jazz bassist and composer. Biography Oh was raised in Western Australia. When she was 11, she started to play the clarinet and at the age of 13 bassoon. She went to Churchlands Senior High School. As a bass guitarist, she started in a high school band; and in 2002, she attended the ''Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts'', where she picked up the upright bass and studied solo transcriptions of Dave Holland. Darcy James Argue is a jazz composer and bandleader known for his work with his 18-piece ensemble, Secret Society. Biography Argue was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He studied at McGill University in Montreal from 1993–1998, and in 2000 he moved to the U.S. to study composition at New England Conservatory of Music with jazz composer Bob Brookmeyer.
