Samuel ''Šəmūʾēl'', Tiberian: ''Šămūʾēl''; ar, شموئيل or صموئيل '; el, Σαμουήλ ''Samouḗl''; la, Samūēl is a figure who, in the narratives of the Hebrew Bible, plays a key role in the transition from the biblical judges to the United Kingdom of Israel under Saul, and again in the monarchy's transition from Saul to David. He is venerated as a prophet in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In addition to his role in the Hebrew scriptures, Samuel is mentioned in Jewish rabbinical literature, in the Christian New Testament, and in the second chapter of the Quran (although Islamic texts do not mention him by name). He is also treated in the fifth through seventh books of ''Antiquities of the Jews'', written by the Jewish scholar Josephus in the first century. He is first called "the Seer" in 1 Samuel 9:9. Sam Roberts (born June 20, 1947) is an American journalist who has written for ''The New York Times'' since 1983, serving as Urban Affairs Correspondent from 2005 to 2015. He now serves as an obituaries writer. He is also host of the NY1 show '' The New York Times Close Up''. Samuel Roberts (mathematician)
Samuel Roberts FRS (15 December 1827, in Horncastle, Lincolnshire – 18 September 1913, in London) was a British mathematician. Roberts studied at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Horncastle. He matriculated in 1845 at the University of London, where he earned in 1847 his bachelor's degree in mathematics and in 1849 his master's degree in mathematics and physics, as first in his class. Next he studied law and became a solicitor in 1853. After a few years of law practice he abandoned his law career and returned to mathematics, although he never had an academic position. He had his first mathematical paper published in 1848. In 1865 he was an important participant in the founding of the London Mathematical Society (LMS). From 1866 to 1892 he acted as legal counsel for LMS, from 1872 to 1880 he was the organization's treasurer, and from 1880 to 1882 its president. In 1896 he received the De Morgan Medal of the LMS. Samuel Roberts (6 March 1800 – 24 September 1885), or simply S.R., was a Welsh minister, known also as a political and economic writer. He was involved in an attempt to set up a Welsh colony in Tennessee, but this was disrupted by the American Civil War. Early life He was the eldest son of the minister John Roberts, born on 6 March 1800 at the chapel-house, Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire. He was taught until he was ten by his father, and subsequently at a school at Shrewsbury, after which he worked on his father's farm, and acquired a knowledge of shorthand. After preaching for his father's church around 1819, Roberts went to the dissenting academy kept by George Lewis (1763–1822), first at Llanfyllin, and later at Newtown, where he remained for six years. Samuel Roberts, a Sheffield cutler, author and supporter of benevolent causes, was born in the city on 18 April 1763. He died there at the age of 85 on 24 July 1848 and was buried in Anston churchyard. Life Samuel Roberts was the second son of the similarly named Sheffield manufacturer and merchant, Samuel Roberts (1732–1799), by his wife Mary Sykes. At the age of fourteen he entered his father's business of silver and plated goods, remaining there until 1784, when he established a firm of his own with fellow apprentice George Cadman (1760–1823). The business prospered and by 1841 had a London showroom at Duke Street, Adelphi. Regarded as one of the ablest manufacturers in Sheffield, Roberts also registered a string of patents for his various innovations. Sir Samuel Roberts, 1st Baronet PC, DL (30 April 1852 – 19 June 1926) was a British politician and businessman. Biography Roberts was the son of Samuel Roberts, of Sheffield. A descendant of the Samuel Roberts who built Queen's Tower in Norfolk Park, Roberts grew up in the building and attended Repton School, Trinity College, Cambridge and then Inner Temple, becoming a barrister in 1877. He became a director of Cammell Laird and of the National Provincial Bank, and was in business in Sheffield. In 1900, he was the Lord Mayor of Sheffield. At the 1900 general election he stood unsuccessfully for the Conservative Party in High Peak, but was elected at the Sheffield Ecclesall by-election in February 1902. He was knighted in 1917 and made a Baronet in 1919. Becoming a Privy Councillor in 1922 under the Conservative Government, he stepped down from Parliament at the 1923 general election.
