Samuel "Sam" Pearson is a fictional character from the British soap opera ''Emmerdale'', played by Toke Townley. Sam is one of the show's original characters appeared for twelve years from the first episode in 1972 until Townley's death in September 1984. Development Sam was often referred to as "Grandad" by other characters in the show. Townley was ''Emmerdale's'' eldest cast member and his on-set persona was unique. Townley would often lose his scripts and call sheets. Though his fellow cast members did not mind because he would always perform well during filming. ''Emmerdale'' producer Richard Handford said that Townley "was such a marvellous character and on the day, he could deliver a performance that was magical." Off-screen Townley had ill-health related to his heart and kept it a secret from production. While out shopping, Townley collapsed and was taken into hospital. The show is set in Emmerdale (known as Beckindale until 1994), a fictional village in the Yorkshire Dales. Created by Kevin Laffan, ''Emmerdale Farm'' was first broadcast on 16 October 1972. Hugh Manning
Hugh Gardner Manning (19 August 1920 – 18 August 2004) was an English film, radio and television actor. He is best remembered as the Reverend Donald Hinton, in the soap opera ''Emmerdale Farm'', a role he played from 1977 until 1989. From 1964 to 1965 he appeared in the ITV drama ''The Sullavan Brothers''. Toke Townley
John Antony Townley (6 November 1912 – 27 September 1984), known professionally as Toke Townley, was an English actor. Biography Townley was born on 6 November 1912 at Great Dunmow, Essex; his father was a vicar. His first name, "John", was changed to "Toke" shortly after his birth. After he left school he worked as a clerk in a factory, acting in his spare time. He did not become a professional actor until his early 30s, first appearing at Birmingham Repertory Theatre. He appeared in many BBC television programmes during the early pioneering days at Alexandra Palace. Joe Sugden
Joseph "Joe" Sugden is a fictional character from the British television soap opera ''Emmerdale'', played by Frazer Hines. He first appeared on-screen during the soap's first episode broadcast 16 October 1972 and remained in the programme until 1983. After a brief return in the following year, Hines reprised his role on a permanent basis in 1986, a landmark year for the show under Richard Handford. He made his last appearance in August 1994, and subsequently died off-screen the following year. In 2019, Hines confirmed that he would like to return to the soap despite his off-screen death. Jack Sugden
John Jacob "Jack" Sugden is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera ''Emmerdale''. The character was originally played by Andrew Burt from 1972 to 1973 with a brief return in 1976, when the actor left for Italy to write a book. On his return in 1980 he was played by Clive Hornby. Hornby remained in the role until 2008 when he was forced to take a break from Emmerdale due to illness. His last on-screen appearance was on 21 February 2008, and his absence was explained by the character visiting his mother, Annie Sugden (Sheila Mercier) in Spain. Although Hornby was intended to return, he died from his illness in July 2008 without returning to the programme.
