Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center
The Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center is the ninth largest federal building in the United States and the largest in the southeast. The building houses 5,000 employees for dozens of federal agencies and combines four distinct structural elements in central downtown, equaling . The Center is a U-shaped complex consisting of several distinct parts: a 24-story Modernist tower completed in 1997, a ten-story building, and the former main building of Rich's (department store), which opened in 1924. It also includes an eight-story bridge, six stories above Forsyth Street. The 1948 "Crystal Bridge", which connected two Rich's buildings, was demolished during the converting of the site to the Federal building complex, and was replaced by a more substantial connector between the high-rise and the 1924 Rich's building. Modernist Architecture
Modern architecture, or modernist architecture, was an architectural movement or architectural style based upon new and innovative technologies of construction, particularly the use of glass, steel, and reinforced concrete; the idea that form should follow function ( functionalism); an embrace of minimalism; and a rejection of ornament. Rich's (department Store)
Rich's was a department store retail chain, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, which operated in the southern U.S. from 1867 until March 6, 2005 when the nameplate was eliminated and replaced by Macy's. Many of the former Rich's stores today form the core of Macy's Central, an Atlanta-based division of Macy's, Inc., which formerly operated as Federated Department Stores, Inc. History Beginnings The retailer began in Atlanta as M. Rich & Co., a dry goods store, on 28 May 1867, at 36 Whitehall Street. The sole proprietor was Mauritius Reich (Anglicized to Morris Rich), a Hungarian Jewish immigrant. It was renamed M. Rich & Bro. in 1877, when Morris and brother Emanuel formed a partnership. Five Points Station
Five Points is a metro station of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) rail system in Atlanta, Georgia. It is the transfer point for all rail lines and serves as the main transportation hub for MARTA. It provides access to Station Soccer, the Five Points Business District, Underground Atlanta, City Hall, the Richard B. Russell Federal Building, CobbLinc (Formerly known as Cobb Community Transit), Gwinnett County Transit, GRTA Xpress Transit, and the tourism heart of Downtown Atlanta. Sam Nunn
Samuel Augustus Nunn Jr. (born September 8, 1938) is an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Georgia (1972–1997) as a member of the Democratic Party. After leaving Congress, Nunn co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a charitable organization working to prevent catastrophic attacks with nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons, for which he is a co-chair. His political experience and credentials on national defense reportedly earned him consideration as a potential running mate for presidential candidates John Kerry and Barack Obama after they became their party's nominees. Early life Nunn was born in Macon, Georgia, the son of Mary Elizabeth (née Cannon) and Samuel Augustus Nunn, who was an attorney and mayor of Perry, Georgia. Nunn was raised in Perry.
