Samantha Hayes (born 25 April 1984) is a South African-born New Zealand journalist and newsreader. Early life and personal life Hayes was born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa to a New Zealand father and a South African mother. The family relocated to Milton in Otago, New Zealand when she was six months old. She has a sister and a brother. She received her education at Tokomairiro High School. She studied at the University of Otago and finished her degree, a Bachelor of Arts, Media & International Relations, at Victoria University of Wellington in 2007. Hayes has been a vegetarian since she was 11 years old for ethical reasons. She said: "I remember looking at new lambs on the farm and thinking I didn’t want to be responsible for them being killed". Sir Samuel Hayes, 1st Baronet (1737–1807) of Drumboe Castle, County Donegal was a Baronet in the Baronetage of Ireland and Member of Parliament for Augher in the Irish House of Commons between 1783 and 1790. Family Hayes’s father Charles Hayes of Bridgwater, Somerset, who married Deborah Holditch of Totnes, Devon, was vice-consul in Lisbon. Samuel worked as a London surgeon and then married Mary Basil, only heiress of valuable estate of Drumboe in the north of Ireland. She was daughter of William Basil (previously Ball) of Wilton Park, Buckinghamshire and Drumboe Castle. Samuel Snowden Hayes (December 25, 1820 – January 28, 1880) was an American politician from Tennessee. Hayes moved to Illinois after a family tragedy and eventually established a successful law practice in Carmi. He became a prominent politician in White County, serving two terms in the Illinois House of Representatives and attending the 1848 state constitutional convention. He was a staunch supporter of the Democratic Party and often campaigned on their behalf. He moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1850 and became one of the city's leading Democratic voices preceding the Civil War. From 1858, he supported Stephen A. Douglas and championed him at the 1860 Democratic National Convention. He was one of the three delegates on the United States Revenue Commission in 1865.
