Sam Gardiner
Alderman Samuel Gardiner MBE JP (24 March 1940 – 8 November 2022) was a Northern Irish Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Upper Bann from 2003 to 2016. Gardiner was elected to Lurgan Borough Council (now Craigavon Borough Council) in 1963 and held office of mayor in that borough in 1968. He was mayor of Craigavon 1982/3, 1988/9 and 2000/1. Gardiner was elected to the Northern Ireland Forum and was party whip in the same in 1996–1998. Gardiner was elected to the Assembly in 2003. He served on the Environmental, Leisure Services and Public Services Liaison Committees and was the UUP spokesperson on environment. As the oldest Northern Ireland Assembly member, Gardiner also served as Father of the House, a role which includes presiding over the election of a new Speaker of the Assembly. Mary Simpson (Northern Ireland Politician)
Mary Simpson (c.1932 – 22 November 2020) was a unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Simpson was honorary secretary of the Central Armagh Unionist Association from 1974 until 1983,Maedhbh McNamara and Paschal Mooney, ''Women in Parliament: Ireland, 1918-2000'', p.236 and was elected to Craigavon Borough Council for the Ulster Unionist Party at the 1977 local elections. She held her seat in 1981, and served as Mayor of Craigavon in 1981/2, the first woman to hold the post. At the 1982 Northern Ireland Assembly election, Simpson stood in Armagh. She took only 721 first-preference votes, leaving her in last position, but she was elected on transfers from party colleagues. Craigavon Borough Council was a local council in counties Armagh, Down and Antrim, in Northern Ireland. It merged with Armagh City and District Council and Banbridge District Council in May 2015 under local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland to become Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon District Council. The headquarters of the council were in Craigavon, on the shores of Lough Neagh, a new town built between Lurgan and Portadown. Glenavon Football Club is a Northern Irish semi-professional football club that competes in the NIFL Premiership. Founded in 1889, the club hails from Lurgan and plays its home matches at Mourneview Park. Club colours are blue and white.
