Sally Smith (politician)
Sarah J. Smith (born January 23, 1945) is an American politician. She was a member of the Alaska Legislature in the 1970s and 1980s, and the mayor of Juneau, Alaska, from 2000 to 2003. She later worked as a field representative for United States Senator Mark Begich. Early life and education Smith was born in Pekin, Illinois on January 23, 1945. She graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1963, then attended the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where she graduated with a bachelor of science in education in 1967. Career Smith moved to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1969. Before entering politics, she worked a variety of jobs, including as a hotel desk clerk, office manager for the '' Tundra Times'', and an expeditor for construction company H. W. Blackstock. Juneau, Alaska, presently incorporated as a unified home rule municipality called the City and Borough of Juneau, was designated the capital of Alaska on June 6, 1900. The organic act passed by the U.S. Congress which established Juneau as the capital also allowed Alaskan communities to incorporate for the first time. Sitka and Nome both established "provisional governments" prior to this; Juneau did not follow suit, but did provide limited public services prior to incorporation, such as fire protection and school instruction. Following the passage of the organic act, Juneau's incorporation petition was certified and the first election of officials occurred on June 29, 1900. West Juneau is a populated place in Juneau, Alaska, United States. It is located on Douglas Island northwest of Douglas. Douglas is a community on Douglas Island in southeastern Alaska, directly across the Gastineau Channel from downtown Juneau. History Douglas Island was originally a border of the Auke people’s and Taku people’s territory. It was not usually used for year-round settlement, but rather as a place to spend the summer, or at times a place for battles. Some historical reports indicate an early settler to the area may be credited for the naming of Douglas Island. In 1880 gold was discovered in Juneau, Alaska, across the narrow Gastineau Channel, drawing in all kinds of people looking to strike it rich. Juneau-Douglas High School
Juneau-Douglas Yadaa.at Kalé High School (abbreviated JDHS or JDYKHS) is one of three high schools in Juneau, Alaska. It is one of two primary high schools for the Juneau School District, the other being Thunder Mountain High School. While Juneau-Douglas High School primarily serves students in Douglas and downtown Juneau, students in the district are free to attend either high school, and make their selection during their final months of eighth grade. Thunder Mountain High School is roughly the same size, but primarily serves students from the Mendenhall Valley. As of the 2021–2022 school year, Paula Casperson is the principal. 2002 Winter Olympics Torch Relay
The 2002 Winter Olympics torch relay was a 65-day run, from December 4, 2001 until February 8, 2002, prior to the 2002 Winter Olympics. The runners carried the Olympic Flame throughout the United States – following its lighting in Olympia, Greece to the opening ceremony of the 2002 games at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. The 2002 torch relay was also the 50th anniversary of the Winter Olympic torch relay, which was first run during the 1952 Winter Olympics. Planning The Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) contracted with Além International Management, Inc. to plan the torch relay route, including security and marketing plans. The plan produced by SLOC and Além was announced to the public on December 4, 2000. 2006 Arctic Winter Games
Approximately 2,000 athletes, coaches, team staff and officials participated in the 2006 Arctic Winter Games on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska in the United States. The 2006 games took place from March 5 through March 11. Events were held mostly in the larger towns of Soldotna and Kenai, along with Homer (curling) and the Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood ( alpine skiing and snowboarding). Jamie Parsons
James McClary Parsons (1941 – December 26, 2015) was an American civil servant, politician and businessman who served as the Mayor of Juneau, Alaska, from 1991 until 1994. Parsons originally moved to Juneau in 1972 to become the city's first Director of Parks and Recreation. He served on the Assembly of the City and Borough of Juneau, Alaska, during the 1980s before being elected mayor in 1991.
