Salisbury Court (Rose Bay)
''Salisbury Court'' is a heritage-listed former apartment building, residence, homestead, kitchen garden and garden and now residence at 1-7 Salisbury Road, Rose Bay in the Municipality of Woollahra local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The original cottage was designed by John Verge and built from 1834 to 1915. It is also known as ''Rose Bay Lodge''; ''Rose Bay Cottage''. The property is privately owned. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. ''Rose Bay Lodge'' (originally known as ''Rose Bay Cottage'') contains the oldest surviving house in the Municipality of Woollahra. Rose Bay is a harbourside, eastern suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Rose Bay is located seven kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government areas of Waverley Council (east of Old South Head Road) and Municipality of Woollahra (on its western side towards the bay). Richard Roberts (Australian Politician)
Richard Hutchinson Roberts (10 July 1835 – 17 June 1903) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to businessman Joseph Roberts and Martha Anne Hutchinson. He came from a Camden settler family and owned Roberton Park near Glenquarry. On 22 September 1853 he married Susanna Neich, with whom he had nine children; a second marriage on 11 January 1900 was to Leila Helen Riach. In 1864 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Camden, but he did not re-contest in 1869. Sands Directory
The Sands Directories, also published as the Sands and Kenny Directory and the Sands and McDougall Directory were annual publications in Australia. They listed household, business, society, and Government contacts in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney including some rural areas of Victoria and New South Wales from the 1850s. City directories are an important resource for historical research, allowing individual addresses and occupations to be linked to specific streets and suburbs. Publisher John Sands (1818-1873) was an engraver, printer and stationer. Born in England he moved to Sydney in 1837. Sands formed several business partnerships, in 1851 with his brother-in-law Thomas Kenny, and in 1860 with Dugald McDougall with the business being known as Sands, Kenny & Co. ''Woollahra House'' refers to two mansions built on the same site in Point Piper, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The first house was built in 1856 by Sir Daniel Cooper and the second by his son, William Charles Cooper, in 1883. Both houses have been demolished, but two buildings still remain from the original structure. The gatekeeper's lodge from Sir Daniel Cooper's house, which was built in 1871, is now the Rose Bay Police Station, and the stables which are now Wyuna Court, a prestigious block of apartments. George Hill (Australian Politician)
George Hill (25 March 1802 – 19 July 1883) was an Australian politician. He was born at Parramatta to convicts William Hill and Mary Johnston. He became a butcher, as did his father, and eventually held significant real estate, as well as land on the Murrumbidgee River. He served on Sydney City Council from 1842 to 1851 and from 1857 to 1858, and was mayor in 1850. He was also a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1848 to 1849 and from 1856 to 1861. He was twice married: first to Mary Ann Hunter, and then to Jane Binnie, with whom he had ten children. Hill died at Surry Hills in 1883. He built Durham Hall, Albion Street, Surry Hills in about 1835, and lived there until his death. Sir Daniel Cooper, 1st Baronet (1 July 1821 – 5 June 1902) was a nineteenth-century politician, merchant and philanthropist in the Colony of New South Wales. He served as the first speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the colony and was a noted philatelist. Cooper was conferred the hereditary title of Cooper baronet of Woollahra in 1863, the second of four baronetcy conferred to British expatriates in the Australian colonies. Early life He was born at Bolton, Lancashire, England, the son of Thomas Cooper, merchant, and his wife Jane Ramsden. He was the nephew of the emancipated convict and extraordinarily successful businessman, Daniel Cooper, who took an interest in the education of his nephew. A fountain, from the Latin "fons" (genitive "fontis"), meaning source or spring, is a decorative reservoir used for discharging water. It is also a structure that jets water into the air for a decorative or dramatic effect. Fountains were originally purely functional, connected to springs or aqueducts and used to provide drinking water and water for bathing and washing to the residents of cities, towns and villages.
