Salazar is a surname meaning ''old hall'' (from Castilian ''Sala'' alland Basque ''zahar'' ld. The name originates from the town of the same name: Salazar, in northern Burgos, Castile, Spain. Although northern Burgos is not currently a Basque-speaking region, the language was spoken there when the surname appeared there during the early Middle Ages. Its origins are also related to a certain noble family, the Salazars, that held a fief in the area. During the 10th century, the surname appears as mentioned in Navarre, where it spread and there even exists a Salazar Valley. It later also spread to the rest of the Basque Country, being specially common in Biscay during the 15th century. António de Oliveira Salazar (, , ; 28 April 1889 – 27 July 1970) was a Portuguese dictator who served as President of the Council of Ministers from 1932 to 1968. Having come to power under the ("National Dictatorship"), he reframed the regime as the ("New State"), a corporatist dictatorship that ruled Portugal from 1933 until 1974. Salazar was a political economy professor at University of Coimbra. Salazar entered public life as finance minister with the support of President Óscar Carmona after the 28 May 1926 coup d'état. The military of 1926 saw themselves as the guardians of the nation in the wake of the instability and perceived failure of the First Republic, but they had no clue how to address the critical challenges of the hour. Salazar de las Palmas () is a Colombian municipality and town located in the department of North of Santander. Etymology The municipality bears the name of Salazar in honor of the oidor , in addition to the fact that "Las Palmas" refers to the fact that when the town was established it was characterized by a large vegetation of palm trees. History In 1583, Captain Alonso Esteban Rangel founded Salazar de las Palmas. The Salazar Valley ( eu, Zaraitzu Ibarra, es, Valle de Salazar) is a valley in the east of the Foral Community of Navarre in Spain. It lies within the Merindad of Zangoza-Sangüesa and within that, the Comarca of Roncal-Salazar. The Sierra de Abodi, part of the Western Pyrenees, forms the natural boundary in the north. There is a ski resort in Abodi. Etymology The first mention of the name was in documents of the Monastery of Leire, with the denomination of ''Sarasazo'' (924). Later ''Sarasazu'' (1055), ''Sarasaz'' (1111 and 1469), ''Sarasaitz'' (1205) especially in texts written in Latin. Zaraitzu seems to derivate from an older form: ''Sarasaitzu''. The Castilian official denomination began being used widely in the 17th century probably influenced by the ''Salazar'' surname, famous in the Nobility of the Iberian Peninsula. ''Trimeresurus salazar'', also known as Salazar's pit viper, is a species of venomous, green pit viper first discovered in 2019 in the lowlands of the western part of Arunachal Pradesh, India; the fifth new reptile species to be discovered in the region in 2019.
