Salamander Bay is a suburb of the Port Stephens local government area in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. The Worimi people are the traditional owners of the Port Stephens area. Named after the adjacent shallow bay, itself named after ''Salamander'', a convict ship from the Third Fleet, which was the first European vessel to enter Port Stephens (1791), it is a mainly residential suburb with a large shopping centre. Port Stephens, an open youthful tide-dominated drowned-valley estuary, is a large natural harbour of approximately located in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. Taylors Beach is a suburb of the Port Stephens local government area in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. It is largely undeveloped except for some commercial and light industrial developments in the southern part of the suburb. The largest population centre is at Taylors Beach itself, in the western part of the suburb, adjacent to Tilligerry Creek and Port Stephens. Tomaree High School
Tomaree High School is a government-funded co-educational comprehensive secondary day school, located in Salamander Bay, a suburb of the Port Stephens Council local government area in New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1988, the school enrolled approximately 1,110 students in 2018, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom eight percent identified as Indigenous Australians and eight percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the NSW Department of Education; the principal is Paul Baxter. Overview A crossbow shooting incident occurred at the school in April 2003. Two 16-year-old girls were injured during the incident. Third Fleet (Australia)
The Third Fleet comprised 11 ships that set sail from the Kingdom of Great Britain in February, March and April 1791, bound for the Sydney penal settlement, with more than 2,000 convicts aboard. The passengers comprised convicts, military personnel and notable people sent to fill high positions in the colony. More important for the fledgling colony was that the ships also carried provisions. The first ship to arrive in Sydney was the ''Mary Ann'' with its cargo of female convicts and provisions on 9 July 1791. HMS Shark (1776)
The British Royal Navy purchased HMS ''Shark'' on the stocks in 1775. She was launched in 1776, and in 1778 converted to a fireship and renamed HMS ''Salamander''. The Navy sold her in 1783. She then became the mercantile ''Salamander''. In the 1780s she was in the northern whale fishery. In 1791 she transported convicts to Australia. She then became a whaling ship in the southern whale fishery for a number of years, before becoming a general transport and then a slave ship. In 1804 the French captured her, but the Royal Navy recaptured her. Although she is last listed in 1811, she does not appear in ''Lloyd's List'' (''LL'') ship arrival and departure (SAD) data after 1804. Worimi
The Worimi (also spelt Warrimay) people are Aboriginal Australians from the eastern Port Stephens and Great Lakes regions of coastal New South Wales, Australia. Before contact with settlers, their people extended from Port Stephens in the south to Forster/Tuncurry in the north and as far west as Gloucester. Country The Worimi's lands extended over according to Norman Tindale, who specified that the tribal area encompassed the Hunter River to the coastal town of Forster near Cape Hawke. It reached Port Stephens and ran inland as far as roughly Gresford and in proximity of Glendon Brook, Dungog, and the upper Myall Creek. To the south, their territory extended to Maitland.
