Sajószentpéter
Sajószentpéter (german: Sankt Peter; la, Villa Sancti Petri) is a town in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, Northern Hungary. It lies in the Miskolc–Kazincbarcika agglomeration, 10 kilometres away from the county capital. History The town was mentioned first in 1281 as ''Szentpéter'' (St. Peter). It got the first part of its name later, from the river Sajó. The town was owned by the king, it belonged first to the Castle of Diósgyőr, then to the Dédes estate. During the Hussite fights the town was destroyed. It was built again after 1466 but got its town status back only in 1989. In the 17th–18th century the town was owned by several important noble families, among them the Rákóczi and the Losonczy families. In the 19th century the formerly agricultural village became an industrial one, coal mines were opened and a glass factory was built. Lea Gottlieb
Lea Gottlieb (September 17, 1918 – November 17, 2012) was an Israeli fashion designer and businesswoman. She immigrated to Israel from Hungary after World War II, and founded the Gottex company. Biography Lea Lenke Roth (later Gottlieb) was born in Sajószentpéter, Hungary, the only daughter of a Jewish family. She was raised in poverty by an aunt. Before World War II began, she was planning to study chemistry, but could not continue higher studies in Budapest because of the quota on Jews accepted to academic institutions. After her marriage to Armin Gottlieb, she worked as a bookkeeper at the raincoat factory owned by her husband's family. During Germany's occupation of Hungary in the mid-1940s, her husband Armin was shipped to a labor camp. Gottlieb hid from the Nazis in Sajószentpéter and Budapest, moving from one hiding place to another with her daughters Miriam and Judith. Chaim Sofer
Chaim Sofer (also known as the Machne Chaim, the name of his responsa) (September 29, 1821 – June 28, 1886) was a renowned Hungarian rabbi and "scholarly spokesperson for Orthodox Judaism during his time." Biography Chaim Sofer was born in Pressburg, Hungary (now Bratislava, Slovakia) on September 29, 1821. His father was Mordechai Efraim Fischel. Sofer attended the famous ''yeshiva'' of Rabbi Moses Sofer (no relation) in Pressburg, and was considered his "most distinguished student". He also attended the ''yeshiva'' of Rabbi Meir Eisenstaedter in Ungvar, Hungary (now Uzhhorod, Ukraine). In 1844, aged 23, he was hired to teach high-school students in a ''yeshiva'' in Mattersdorf, Hungary (now Mattersburg, Austria). Sigismund Rákóczi
Sigismund Rákóczi ( hu, Rákóczi Zsigmond; 1544 – 5 December 1608) was Prince of Transylvania from 1607 to 1608. He was the son of János Rákóczi, a lesser nobleman with estates in Upper Hungary. Sigismund began a military career as the sword-bearer of the wealthy Gábor Perényi in Sárospatak. After Perényi died in 1567, Sigismund served in the royal fortresses of Eger and Szendrő. The royal chamber mortgaged him several estates to compensate him for unpaid salaries. He received Szerencs in 1580, which enabled him to engage in the lucrative Tokaji wine trade. He took possession of the large estates of András Mágóchy's minor sons as their guardian, and the second husband of their mother Judit Alaghy, in 1587. Dobšiná (german: Dobschau; hu, Dobsina; Latin: ''Dobsinium'') is a small town in the Slovak Ore Mountains along the Slaná River. For 500 years it was a small but prosperous mining village populated by ethnic Germans within the Kingdom of Hungary; today it is a Slovak town of 6,000 most well-known for its Ice Cave.
