Saint Maria Goretti Parish (San Jose, California)
Saint Maria Goretti Parish is a territorial parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Jose in California. The parish was formed in July 1961 from orchards off Senter Road near Capitol Expressway. The parish was created while still part of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, prior to the founding of the Diocese of San Jose in 1981. This occurred during the tenure of Joseph Thomas McGucken, Most Rev. Joseph McGucken, Archbishop of San Francisco, to serve Catholics of San Jose, California, San Jose. The parish is named for Maria Goretti, St Maria Goretti an Italian virgin martyr saint of the 19th and early 20th century. Maria Goretti
Maria Teresa Goretti (; October 16, 1890 – July 6, 1902) is an Italian virgin-martyr of the Catholic Church, and one of the youngest saints to be canonized. She was born to a farming family. Her father died when she was nine, and the family had to share a house with another family, the Serenellis. Maria took over household duties while her mother, brothers and sister worked in the fields. One afternoon, Alessandro, the Serenellis' 20-year-old son, made sexual advances to her. When she refused to submit to him, he stabbed her 14 times. She was taken to the hospital but she died forgiving him. He was arrested, convicted and jailed. During imprisonment, he repented. After 27 years, he was released from prison and visited her mother to beg forgiveness, which she granted. He later became a lay brother in a Capuchin monastery and died in 1970. She was beatified in 1947 and canonized in 1950. She is especially venerated in the Congregation of the Passion (Passionists). Biography ... Salvatore Joseph Cordileone (born June 5, 1956) is an American prelate of the Catholic Church and the archbishop of Archdiocese of San Francisco in California since 2012. Joseph Thomas McGucken (March 13, 1902 – October 6, 1983) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (1941–1955), coadjutor bishop and bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento (1955–1962) and archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Francisco (1962–1977).
