Saint George Hare
Saint George Hare (5 July 1857 Limerick – London, 1933) was an Irish artist. Life He was the son of George Frederick Hare, a dentist from Ipswich, and his wife, Ella, from County Wexford. He was formally educated in art in Limerick School of Art, where he spent three years under the tutelage of Nicholas Brophy. In 1875, he received a scholarship and moved to London to study for seven years at the National Art Training School, South Kensington. He won a gold medal for his history painting "Death of William the Conqueror," which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1886. He supplemented his income from painting with teaching. In 1891, he was a founding member of the Chelsea Arts Club. He was an elected member of both the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. ''The Victory of Faith'' is an oil painting, oil on canvas painting by Irish artist Saint George Hare that was completed in 1891. It depicts two sleeping Nude (art), nude women, one shackled, likely Christian martyrs sentenced to death by beasts (see ''damnatio ad bestias''). ''The Victory of Faith'' is one of several paintings by Hare showing shackled women, another notable example being ''The Gilded Cage (Saint George Hare painting), The Gilded Cage''. A contemporary article in ''The Homiletic Review'' called it an "impressive depiction of Christian faith and steadfastness" and described the two women to be in a "sisterly embrace", while a modern description by Kobena Mercer named the work as an example of an interracial lesbian couple, likening it to ''Les Amis'' by Jules Robert Auguste. Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Baronet
Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Baronet (19 November 1865 – 25 March 1947) was an English landowner, best known for his restoration of the country house at Stourhead in Wiltshire, following a fire in April 1902. Prior to his death he donated the house and gardens to the National Trust. Hoare's parents were Henry Arthur Hoare and his wife Julia Lucy (née Lane); he was thus the grandson of Sir Henry Hugh Hoare, 3rd Baronet. He was educated at Harrow School, and later served in the 3rd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. In 1887, Henry Hoare married Alda Weston, whom he had known since childhood. Their only child, Henry Colt Arthur Hoare, known as Harry, was born in 1888. Harry joined the Dorset Yeomanry at the start of the First World War and died of wounds received while fighting in Egypt, in December 1917, leaving his father without an heir. The Chelsea Arts Club is a private members' club at 143 Old Church Street in Chelsea, London with a membership of over 3,800, including artists, sculptors, architects, writers, designers, actors, musicians, photographers, and filmmakers. The club was established on 21 March 1891 (in Chelsea), as a rival to the older Arts Club in Mayfair, on the instigation of the artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who had been a (sometimes controversial) member of the older club. The National Trust, formally the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty, is a charity and membership organisation for heritage conservation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
