Saint-Jean is a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1968. Geography The riding extends along the Richelieu River southeast of Montreal, in the Quebec region of Montérégie. It consists of the northern and western parts of the RCM of Le Haut-Richelieu. The neighbouring ridings are Beauharnois—Salaberry, Brossard—La Prairie, Chambly—Borduas, Shefford, and Brome—Missisquoi. Its population is 102,902, with 85,659 registered electors, and has an area of 734 km². Profile Long a Bloc stronghold, the riding of Saint-Jean turned orange as the NDP swept the province of Quebec in 2011. Tarik Brahmi
Tarik Brahmi (born May 19, 1968) is a Canadian engineer and politician. He was the Member of Parliament for the riding of Saint-Jean from 2011, when he defeated incumbent Claude Bachand of the Bloc Québécois, until 2015, and sat with New Democratic Party caucus. Born in Lyon, France, with a father from Toudja, Algeria, he graduated from the Université de Montpellier in 1991 with a degree in Microelectronics and Control Engineering. He became interested in environmental causes in 1995, and worked in software development. He immigrated to Canada in 2002 and became a Canadian citizen in 2006. He was a candidate for the municipal council of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in 2009. Jean Rioux
Jean Rioux (born June 9, 1953) is an educator, businessman and Quebec politician, who served as the Member of Parliament for Saint-Jean as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada from 2015 until 2019. He previously represented Iberville in the Quebec National Assembly from 2003 to 2007 as a Liberal. The federal electoral redistribution of 2012 was a redistribution of electoral districts ("ridings") in Canada following the results of the 2011 Canadian census. As a result of amendments to the Constitution Act, 1867, the number of seats in the House of Commons of Canada increased from 308 to 338. The previous electoral redistribution was in 2003. Background and previous attempts at reform Prior to 2012, the redistribution rules for increasing the number of seats in the House of Commons of Canada was governed by section 51 of the ''Constitution Act, 1867'', as last amended in 1985. Beauharnois—Salaberry is a former federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1949 to 2015. Geography In 2003, the riding was re-defined to consist of the regional county municipalities of Beauharnois—Salaberry, Les Jardins-de-Napierville, and Le Haut-Saint-Laurent, including the parts of Akwesasne Indian Reserve No. 15 that lie within Quebec.
