Sailing (sport)
The sport of sailing involves a variety of competitive sailing formats that are sanctioned through various sailing federations and yacht clubs. Racing disciplines include matches within a fleet of sailing craft, between a pair thereof or among teams. Additionally, there are specialized competitions that include setting speed records. Racing formats include both closed courses and point-to-point contests; they may be in sheltered waters, coast-wise or on the open ocean. 2013 Bolivarian Games
The 2013 Bolivarian Games (Spanish: ''Juegos Bolivarianos''), officially the XVII Bolivarian Games, was a major international multi-sport event that was held from November 16–30, 2013, in Trujillo, Peru, Trujillo, Peru, with some events held in Lima and Chiclayo. Approximately 4,500 athletes from 11 nations participated in 44 sports. These Games was the third Bolivarian Games that was hosted by Peru. Previously, Peru hosted the 1947–48 Bolivarian Games and the 1997 Bolivarian Games. Since 2011, Trujillo was preparing the sport buildings for the Bolivarian Games. The 2013 Bolivarian Games was the first one to have athletes from 11 countries, instead of the usual 6 members of the Bolivarian Sports Organization (ODEBO). The Laser is a class of Single-handed sailing, single-handed, one-design dinghy sailing, sailing dinghies using a common hull design with three interchangeable rigs of different sail areas, appropriate to a given combination of wind strength and crew weight. Bruce Kirby (yachts), Bruce Kirby designed the Laser in 1970 with an emphasis on simplicity and performance. The Laser is a widely produced class of dinghies. Sunfish (sailboat)
The Sunfish is a personal-size, beach-launched sailing dinghy. It features a very flat, boardlike hull carrying an Oceanic lateen sail mounted to an un- stayed mast. Sunfish was developed by Alcort, Inc. and first appeared around 1952 as the "next generation" improvement on their original boat, the Sailfish. In contrast, the Sunfish has a wider beam for more stability, increased freeboard and the addition of a foot-well for a more comfortable sailing position. Sunfish began as a wood hull design and progressed to fiberglass construction just a few years after its introduction. Daniel Alejandro Flores Peréz (born 17 October 1981 in Cumaná, Sucre) is a Venezuelan windsurfer, who specialized in Neil Pryde RS:X class. He represented Venezuela at the 2012 Summer Olympics and has also been training for Cumaná Windsurf Club under his personal coach and mentor Juan Manuel Moreno. As of September 2013, Flores is ranked no. 31 in the world for the sailboard class by the International Sailing Federation. Optimist (dinghy)
The Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by young people up to the age of 15. The Optimist is one of the two most popular sailing dinghies in the world, with over 150,000 boats officially registered with the class and many more built but never registered. It is sailed in over 120 countries and it is one of only two sailboats as an International Class by World Sailing exclusively for sailors under 16. Origin The Optimist was designed in 1947 by American Clark Mills at the request of the Clearwater Florida Optimist service club following a proposal by Major Clifford McKay to offer low-cost sailing for young people.
