SailGP is an international sailing (sport), sailing competition using high performance F50 (catamaran), F50 Sailing hydrofoil, foiling catamarans, where teams compete across a season of multiple grands prix around the world. Its reigning champions are Tom Slingsby's Australia SailGP Team, who won their 2nd consecutive title in the 2021–22 SailGP championship. Background The competition was founded by Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle Corporation, Oracle and champion yachtsman Russell Coutts. Their aim was to establish a commercially viable global race series with a large audience. This had been unsuccessfully attempted in the past with series such as the Extreme Sailing Series. 2021–22 SailGP Championship
The 2021–22 SailGP Championship was the second season of the SailGP championship. Originally due to be contested in 2020, the season was postponed to 2021 after the first round in Sydney due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and was then extended into the early months of 2022. The championship was again won by the Australian team. New Zealand was the inaugural winner of the Impact League. Entries Team changes After only one season, China left the championship. Denmark and Spain joined the championship in Sydney, while New Zealand entered in Bermuda. Calendar Although the opening round in Sydney proceeded as planned, results from the race were declared void upon the postponement of the season until 2021. Nine races were expected in the expanded calendar, and eight were announced before the addition of a new Sydney round. 2022–23 SailGP Championship
The 2022–23 SailGP Championship is the third season of the SailGP championship. Entries Team changes Canada and Switzerland joined the championship, increasing the number of teams to nine. Japan SailGP Team participation has been indefinitely paused during the 2022–23 season due to a shortage of F50 yachts. Since new entrants Canada and Switzerland are self-funded, Japan was selected from the centrally-funded teams to give up their yacht due to a lack of sponsorship for the team. Japan's former helm and CEO Nathan Outteridge has since signed onto the Swiss SailGP Team and served as skipper in recent regattas. Calendar Four new venues joined the schedule with the additions of Chicago, Dubai, Singapore and New Zealand. Italy will not continue as a venue for this season. F50 (catamaran)
The F50 is a one-design foiling catamaran used in the SailGP race series. The F50s are adapted from the AC50s used in the America's Cup, with modifications including new control systems and modular wingsails. The F50s are one of the fastest racing classes in history, with a predicted top speed of 52.2 knots (96.6 km/h, 60 mph); the current F50 speed record, achieved by the France SailGP Team at the Range Rover France Sail Grand Prix in 2022, stands at 53.96 knots (99.94 km/h, 62.10 mph). Three AC50s from the 2017 America's Cup were converted to comply with the F50 one-design rule to create the new SailGP fleet racing circuit. 2019 SailGP Championship
The 2019 SailGP Championship was the first season of the SailGP championship, and was won by the Australian team. Entries The series had six teams enter, all of which competed in all rounds. Calendar The season was contested over five rounds, of which all but one were won by the Australian team. Season Round 1: Sydney Round 2: San Francisco Round 3: New York Round 4: Cowes Round 5: Marseilles Results Points were awarded per race, with 10 points for the winner, 9 points for second place, 8 points for third, and so on. Each event hosted multiple races, with the two highest scoring teams after each round facing off one-on-one. The winner of that final race won the event. The two highest scoring teams at the end of the season competed in Marseille with the winning team awarded the championship. Sailing Hydrofoil
A sailing hydrofoil, hydrofoil sailboat, or hydrosail is a sailboat with wing-like foils mounted under the hull. As the craft increases its speed the hydrofoils lift the hull up and out of the water, greatly reducing wetted area, resulting in decreased drag and increased speed. A sailing hydrofoil can achieve speeds exceeding double and in some cases triple the wind speed. Both monohull and multihull sailboats can be retrofitted with hydrofoils, although greater stability can be achieved by using the wider planform of a catamaran or trimaran. Typical configurations Some multihulls use three foils; two main forward foils provide lift so that the boat "flies" while a horizontal foil on the rudder is trimmed to drive and control altitude. Tom Slingsby
Tom Slingsby (born 5 September 1984) is a successful Australian competitive sailor. Slingsby's first successes came sailing Laser dinghys, where he won three consecutive world championships and the 2012 Olympic gold medal. Slingsby was the strategist for the America's Cup-winning Team Oracle USA in 2013. In 2016 he skippered the winner-of-line honours in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race line. Following this he skippered the Australian team in the inaugural SailGP competition. Sir Russell Coutts (born 1 March 1962) is a world champion New Zealand yachtsman. Early and personal life Coutts was educated at Otago Boys' High School (1975–1979) and is a Life Member of Paremata Boating Club, where he learnt to sail in a P class, and the Ravensbourne Boating Club. Coutts has three children, and has been married twice.
