Moses Orimolade Tunolase is the founder of the first African initiated church, the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim, which was established in 1925. The church was born out of the Anglican Communion, Anglican church community among the Yoruba people in Western Nigeria. History Moses Orimolade Tunolase was born 1879 into the royal family of Ayibiri in Okorun Ikare Akoko Ondo State of Nigeria. Orimolade could neither stand nor walk until he was well over five years of age. In an effort to get Orimolade the help he needed, his parents had taken him to St. Stephen's Anglican Church, the only church in the Yoruba town of Ikare in Western Nigeria at the time. Orimolade was often left in the custody of the clergyman at this Church Missionary Society, Church (Missionary Society) establishment of the Anglican Communion. African Initiated Church
An African-initiated church (AIC) is a Christian church independently started in Africa by Africans rather than chiefly by missionaries from another continent. Nomenclature A variety of overlapping terms exist for these forms of Christianity: African-initiated churches, African independent churches, African indigenous churches, and African-instituted churches. The abbreviation AIC covers them all. The differences in names correspond to the aspect that a researcher wishes to emphasise. For instance, those who wish to point out that AICs exhibit African cultural forms, describe them as ''indigenous''. These terms have largely been imposed upon such groups and may not be the way they would describe themselves.
