Oryol ( rus, Орёл, p=ɐˈrʲɵl, lit. ''eagle''), also transliterated as Orel or Oriol, is a city and the administrative center of Oryol Oblast situated on the Oka River, approximately south-southwest of Moscow. It is part of the Central Federal District, as well as the Central Economic Region. ''L'Étoile du soldat'' is a French film by the director Christophe de Ponfilly, who made several movies and documentaries in Afghanistan. The film was released after his suicide in 2006. Synopsis The film retraces the steps of a Russian guitarist, Nikolaï, from a town outside Moscow. He has a poor relationship with his parents and when Nikolaï is drafted into the Russian army and sent to the 1980s Soviet–Afghan War, his father thinks this will make him into a real man. We are then shown how the Russian forces have established a base in a remote valley, from where they are trying to root out Mujahideen rebels fighting the Russian-backed regime in Kabul. The new Russian recruits are unprepared and unsure why and who they are fighting.
